I recieved an email from Mike (Conch27) on Wednesday to fish with him and a couple of his mechanics on Saturday. He needed someone with a little experience to help out in the pit with his guys. Patrick and Colt were not able to make this trip, so I gladly joined Mike. We decided to run out of OI with the past reports of the tuna bite going off. After a 30 minute wait at the inlet trying to get out (a dredge was in the middle of the channel and we had no clue on the approach until we saw another boat successfully hail the dredge and go the north of it), we reached the tuna hole around 8:00.
We trolled with the OI fleet who had been catching them up. We ended up going 3 for 4 on the yellowfin and one blackfin tuna. We lost one that was even bigger than the 55lber when the rod tip got a little close to another rod on the gunnel and under all that pressure snapped. The first 3 fish all hit on the way back (including the one we lost) and the other big fish hit right at the boat on the shore flat. We ran all skirted ballyhoo and no bars. Mike's two mechanics George and Benjamin did great and you should have seen their double team approach to fighting that big tuna. It was definately a little sporty out but we made the most of it and put fish in the box.
Thanks again Mike for the invite and as always you put us on the fish.
