If it is over 10 feet or has brakes it has to be inspected in Va.

Pulled this from the State Police Safety Inspection FAQ website:
http://www.vsp.state.va.us/Safety.shtm#FAQSafety"I have a small trailer and I would like to know if it is required to be inspected.
It depends. If the "actual gross weight" is 3,000 pounds or more, it is required to have brakes and is required to be inspected. (The "actual gross weight" is the weight of the trailer plus the weight of any load that the trailer is carrying.) If the "actual gross weight" is less than 3,000 pounds, it is not required to be inspected; however, any trailer under 3,000 that is equipped with brakes is also required to be inspected."

Thats what I was thinking- the brakes on the trailer are the determining factor for state inspection. I never used to get any of my trailers inspected but picked up a ticket while on the bay at Crab Creek. VB police cruise through and write violations occasionally so my boat trailer is religously inspected now.

As stated, if it has brakes, and brakes are required over a certain weight boat.

I, too, learned of this from the Crab Creek Courtesy Patrol...

Weellllll..... I knew of it already but have 6 trailers w/brakes and it is a pain to keep them all up to date. Some of them don't get a lot of use. I always figured that either I would have to get pulled over for something else or LE would have to pull up directly beside the trailer tongue to see the sticker anyway so opt not to do the annual inspection. The boat trailer is now reguarly inspected though. I noticed one day at the public ramp at West Point a 'team' was working the lot- a deputy, state police and DOT. You just never know!
