I read a thread like this on another board and figured that I would ask. I bought this book a couple of weeks ago after reading about it in two different magazines in the same week. I havent read the whole book yet but it gives detailed descriptions of hot spots for the entire bay and what fish you would expect to catch there and how to catch them. This book is well worth the 13 dollars and is especially good for people new to fishing or the area. I found it at the Barnes and Noble in Greenbriar.

I glanced in it while at the book store, went to book store because rain and no football on.

Remembered it mentioned here and decided to look at it.

My preference would be for more illustrations in the book.

The guy probably wrote that book after reading this forum for a year.

We should all get together and write a book!!

If this forum wrote a book on fishing, I bet it would be pretty short. In fact, the chapter on speck fishing would be a blank page. laugh.gif

never caught a speckled trout. Only caught them in gill nets as a child.

Fishist you been speck fishing?

I've been speck fishing right along but mostly caught undersized fish. Too much bait in Rudee and Lynnhaven just hasn't been real productive yet for me. Hopefully, when this awful stretch of weather clears up and the water temps drop things will improve.

As for the Rudow book, I bought it the other day and read the parts that pertained to me. I don't fish the upper bay and don't do much fresh water fishing so I could skip about half the book. The various techniques outlined were pretty accurate but I didn't learn much I didn't already know. I don't suspect many on this chatline would either. It's kind of "put the sinker and hooks on, put bait on the hooks, and that part goes in the water. Keep the rod and reel in the boat with you." There are a few inaccuracies and oversights (ie. 20 ft. of water in Winter Harbor? No mention of Hungars Creek when talking about fishing in that area.) Overall, to me it is a beginners book for those who want to take up fishing and know nothing about it. I think it pales in comparison to Tidewater Fishing by Skip Miller, the absolute best written and most informative area fishing book I have ever read. Unfortunately, I think that book is out of print.

You are right about "Tidewater Fishing"--it is an excellent read and very helpful as a resource. It is out of print, but available at the Daily Press office in Newport News for around $13. I got a copy last year and as a new boater, it helped me tremendously with location, timing, and gear for just about any species of significance in the bay.
