Bluefish love to bite off the tails on storm lures or other shad bodies, and no one makes replacement tails yet. I read on a Florida website that a fellow fisherman suggested soaking soft plastic baits in vegetable oil for 2-3 days. This is will toughen up the baits and may help in bluefish bite offs. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm going to give it a shot on a couple of them and see what happens. It's worth a try to save some tails. I'll let you know the results.

what type of storm luers is everyone talking about? this is the first year I will be doing any striper fishing. I fish mostly in the summer for flownder and spot in the early fall.
All pier and surf fishing. Any other good luers I should look in to.
thanks

traveler727,

They are the Storm Lures that are soft platic that look like bait fish. They come in colors that look like spot, menhaden, trout, etc. We mostly use the bunker, or menhaden and the spot colors. They come in 1" up to 9". This time of year around the rocks and pilings of the bridges we use 3"-5" and then troll the bigger ones when its ocean time. They are great lures because of their action. They look like a real fish that is swiming when its in the water. Whatever tackle shop you go to, just ask for the storm lures and they'll take you right to them.
You can also use bucktails with curlytailed grubs, or big jig heads with shad bodies on them. Stripers will eat just about anything.

Good luck and Catch 'em Up!!

Just go to any tackle store and ask about the storm lure. They have them everywhere now.

Storm "wild eye" is the name of them.

Tsunamis work also. There was some days they seemed to work better then the Storms, probably just the color but I usually keep a wide variety of both in my box. Chartreuse is one of the better colors. Tsunami and Storm are the name brand of the lure and they are in sold in plastic bags. Any local shop will have them. I have never casted them from piers or the surf but I'm sure they would work espcially at night around the lights.

Storms are good lures. But when you loose a tail to a bluefish, save yourself the trouble and switch to a leadhead jig and grub, shad body, or other soft plastics. Sometimes you want to get down deep which you can do easier with a leadhead since you can use different weights. It's also easier to switch colors with the jig. Don't get me wrong, the Storm is an awesome lure. But there are alot of other options. In late November when all the other species are gone, I use alot of Storms. I've caught 30 striper on the same lure before. I pretty much never use hard plastics. I don't like the treble hooks. The only time I go there is when sometimes a Rattletrap is the only thing they will bite or if I'm catching all bluefish I might go with a spoon or Gotcha plug. Also, they make this 'soft bait glue' and I forget the brand but I used some yesterday and it works really well repairing those storms that were mauled by bluefish or trout. Of course, that won't help if they bite it off totally.
