Left the inlet before dawn, ran southeast to the 650 line. Cloudy, misting rain with the occasional downpour and serious lightning. Seas were great, 2-3 ft. Put in and soon after the right long went off and a 50 lb yellowfin went in the box. Pink and blue witch with a medium hoo. The clouds lifted north, and the sun came out! Of course, my sunglasses were in the truck! Then nothing for 3 hours. A large part of the fleet had joined us, getting the occasional fish. About 10:00 we we drove over a pod of fish, hooked up 4, got 3 in the box, 25 lb footballs, all on witch/hoo combo's. Color didn't seem to matter. Then nothing for 3 hours. Pulled up and ran 15 miles to the north, heard on the radio some nice fish had been caught. Put in on the 100 fathom curve, with the other half of the fleet. Wind picked up, seas went to 5 to 7 feet. Switched out the long shotgun for a bird/spreader bar hybrid with 12" blue/white squid trailed by a green machine. Trolled inshore, got another 50 lb class yft. Then about 2:30, in 70 fathoms, all hell broke loose. Got one on the spreader bar, kept the boat in gear and got covered up. 7 big 50 to 60 lb yellowfins on and only 5 people on the boat! And 2 of those had never been tuna fishing before. Lines twisted and tangled, people screaming, tunas and rods flying every which way, it was FANTASTIC! To everyone's credit, every tangle was worked out without losing a single fish. We did lose 2, 1 in the props which was huge. But given the circumstances, with that many big tunas at the back of the boat and that many rookies on the team, I was very happy with the results. Got home about 10:30. Still got fish to vacuum pack this morning. If you plan on heading out sometime soon, don't forget the spreader bars. The bigger the better, noise is good. Tight lines and good luck.

Sounds like a story straight out of "The Best and Worst of Tred Barta." I'll let you decide which category it falls in.
