That happened to me last year off a nice big spoon. sorry to hear you lost the fish but I bet it was a blast fighting him.....
we fished south of sandbridge...same thing...birds, marks....no bites, put down a couple of small wind cheaters and starting pulling in small blue fish.....
We pulled lines and left.....lot of fish down that way but not really in the mood to eat yet.....Bob

Sucks to lose a good rod, but sucks more to lose a great fish. I would have done the same thing. You'll get em next time.
