QUOTE: STORY FROM ANOTHER BOARD
""I have read the posts (other board) here and I would like to clarify a couple of items. I am licensed Captain and run a 26 foot Mako, Triple Crown. I have over 20 years of experince fishing off the NC coast. I worked as a fisheries biologist for close to 5 years with the DMF (ICMR). I am not a tourist. I had friends down for the holidays for a long fishing trip. The basic story is that I hooked up three fish at once and put two kids on a rod and then on the third rod, one of my best friends, who now lives in Michigan. The first two fish were in the mid 30s and the third fish was the State Record. David Hiebert will be listed as the angler in the record book. The fish was caught on a white mojo, with of course some serious doctoring by me. There was NOT another mojo hanging out of its mouth. Please do not question my tackle, I am very meticulous. I had the 80 on the boat because I had just been off tuna fishing. The picture on the OI web site is of me, not David Heibert, my angler. That was a choice of OI Fishing Center, there were probably thousands of photos taken. At the time of the weighing at OI I was told the state record was 63#. I was under the impression I had missed by one pound. Because of this, and becuase the scale at OI does not read ounces, I was going to verify that weight on another scale. On the way to TW's my friend John Cain confirmed by phone the old record was 60# and this fish was a new record. I went on to TW's, and more or less to please the on-lookers we got out the fish again and threw it on their scale, that had not been tested since year 2000. We took some pictures. I was NOT trying to get another citation. I called the DMF to verify I had done all I needed to certify the record. They called me back and said everything was fine.

I was not in the Hooters tourney, which I guess is a shame. The memories are worth more. My only regret is that I did not run in right away, I was guessing the fish was in the low-mid 50's. It was 6 hours before I weighed it in. Who knows how much it lost in weight. ""

It's a dam shame that somebody who catches a nice fish like that has to justify how/when and why he caught a record fish. It Never fails man.....Catch a record and the whole world is against you. Congratulations to the Captain and angler who landed this beautiful specimen of a striper. You deserve to be in the record books.....Bob....Still Think'n

Wow! Glad to get the straight dope. We had heard that the fish was caught IN the inlet.I guess they meant the boat was OUT OF Oregon Inlet. ohmy.gif
By the way, where were you getting all the flack from? I haven't heard anything even slightly off color about your fish on this site.It didn't look like anyone was "dissing" you on "OuterbanksFishing.com "either.
