You got my interest when you mentioned catching a 17# striper on the James in Richmond. How early in the year do the fish make it to Richmond?

Since the Bay seasoned closed and the ocean report was for 3-4 footers we decided on a catfish trip on the James around Hopewell. Caught two fish. One 5 lbs and Dad caught the one in the picture. It was 47 inches with a 32" girth. Bottomed out my 50 lb. scale so I used Lengthxgirthxgirth/ 800 to estimate the fish near 60lbs.

Tight Lines

Lasted something like 6 hours.

Reminded me of the Blue blitzs me and Dad would get into in the 80's.

When the dogwoods bloom after the white perch and herring. April May. Please note however where i cought the fish at the fall line(14th street bridge) is no off limits(spawning ground).

It is great fishing around the gravel barges near were you caught the cats.

Cut herring and rippling redfins and zera spooks are the best baits.

One of my crew called this morning and has purchase a 24 carolina skiff so we can chase them during the river runs.
going to raliegh wed to pick it up.

Pretty catfish. the say that ther is at least one down aroud hopewell that will go over 80 lbs

good luck

Do the fish school up around Hopewell that time of year? Are you fishing blind or looking for birds and bait fish?

In the spring the rock fish run up the james as far as they can go to spawn. The fall line which is at the 14th street bridge is usually the stopping point. there is a boundry and VMRC and Game and inland both have this on there web, this area you can not fish. This is the spring spawn and they tend to stack up like cord wood.

You can run up river to the boundry line

We use cut herring, caught fresh in the weeks prior to the 30 to 60 day spawn run. We also throw buck tails and redfin. Most of this is blind. Usually at sunset with a tide change the surface of the river will boil with fish the feeding.

It is an amazing thing

You can keep 'em at the fall line. At least I've never been caught. No keeping near hopewell, though.
