Last minute trip. No crew, flying solo. Came out of OC @ 7:00 am and saw hundreds of gannets flying north and the few reports from south of Rudee were not good. Well, I followed the birds, and followed, and followed some more. No bait, birds or fish at CH. Kept going. Across the Bay. Felt like Forrest Gump. At Cape Charles they all turned NW, into the bay, so I kept on going North. I figured if I went far enough the fish gods would reward me, right? Well, the fish gods had other ideas. Zilch, nada, nothing! About 10 miles North of Cape Charles, I turned around when I heard that the bite was on at Sandbridge. Went all the way there to find birds working 2 miles off the pier. Droppped a yellow mojo with a bunker storm trailer on one rod and before I could let a yellow stretch 30 all the way out on the other, the line was screaming off the first rod. When I took the rod out of the holder, I thought I had Shamu. It pulled HARD! MAN, I knew I had the biggest striper I'd ever hooked, and I was by myself, too. There had to be 50 lbs. of fish on the line. Well, to make a long story short, Shamu turned out to be 39" and 36" fish on the same rod. Good tug! Got'em both in my big net. It gets better, I reel in the stretch 30 with a 20" flounder on it! He was hungry! The funny thing was that the 25-30 boats that were there, went north, chasing birds and left me by myself. Thanks guys. I stayed in the same place and caught a dozen or so more nice fish. Back in by noon.
Hope to see everyone Friday night!
