In today's Va. pilot, their is an editrial written by Toby Gascon of Omega Protein corporation. This was in response to the editrial published on Feb. 6th. Toby states "they believe the restrictions (potential) are arbitrary, capricious and unsupported by sound science." he also points out that the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission is basing its proposed cap on the sheer speculation that there might be a shrinking menhaden population in the Chesapeake Bay. He also states that the restrictions are being pushed by "radical groups such as Greenpeace". He finshes by stating that they remain openly opposed to draconian restrictions that threaten the livelihood of our workers and the communities in which we live.

We as people, fishermen, brothers, sisters, ect. are opposed to their draconian efforts to wipe out one of one the most important species of fish that swims in OUR Chesapeake Bay and oceans!!!!!!!!

Your thoughts??

If you go to the menhaden matter website, you can send a form letter to Governor Kaine stating your position.

http://www.menhadenmatter.org/

I have friends that spend a lot time in Richmond dealing with the State Assembly and Senate. It seems that most of our representatives do not want to "touch" this issue as they are afraid of the power of the Omega Lobby and that the Governor is focused on transportation issues and doesn't want to get involved. The only way we will be heard is by writing the Governor and your legislators.
BRING EM IN
Thanks for making the post Bythegills,and 71Whaler for putting the link there so we can send Kaine a letter to protect the Medhaden. We dont need someone trying to increase the amount that can be taken. The balance seems just about right in the bay and Ocean. I believe in "Let a sleeping dog lie" cause if you wake him he may bite you.

BRING EM IN
For those that read the post and want to send a letter to Kaine from the link 71Whaler posted it takes less than 60 seconds to send. They have a pre-posted letter that you use and some basic info and its gone. Tight lines to all

I attended an open hearing a couple of years ago on this subject (the outcome was that ASMFC put a restriction on OMEGA) and this same Toby Gascon of Omega Protein Corporation at that meeting made the statement that (summarized here);

' if you stop catching the menhaden then they will over-populate the bay, use up all the oxygen, and die. So by catching what we do helps the bay.'

He is their government representative and if I was head of Omega, I would get rid of him.......... stupid statements......
