I have small dingy so I'm checking small waters. Anyone fish the Chuckatuck or Nansemond river, or the area around Portsmouth campus of tidewater community collegel. I believe this should be a salt water or is it brackish at some piont? What can you get to pull in this area.

In that area, I would check the following:1)Lone Star Lakes,which have a tributary access to the Nansemond..2)Surrey Hot Ditch (which I have never fished,so check with somebody else for exact directions ) 3) Elizabeth River Hot Ditch, which should be holding stripers for catch and release, near the bridge pilings 4)Got freshwater license? Try Little Creek Res. over in York County for good crappie fishing, plus FW stripers.It is a electric motor (or rowing) only lake, and great for dinghy work. 5) You can car-top down to Rudee Inlet,too,in Va Beach for specks and puppy drum
Those are some of my places I fish when the big boat is down or like that.That should keep ya busy for a spell!

Try Bennets Creek in Suffolk right off the Nansemond. There is a marina right off of route 17 with a pay ramp. There is a free ramp at Bennets Creek Park off of Shoulders Hill Road. In a few weeks the Creek will be filled with croakers and I do mean filled. We put about 50 in the boat last year in two hours just inside the Bennets Creek Bridge at the mouth of the small creek that empties into Bennets Creek. I am not a huge croaker fisherman but it sure is fun for the family.

Believe it or not, I saw people catching both croakers and catfish off the pier at Bennetts Creek Park last year. I believe it was early May.
