Well you have alot to choose from. If gas is is an issue I would go togging that way you don't have to run the boat as much. The tog a doing great over the tubes and on the yancy. The pilings are holding some of the bigger fish but please throw the females back smile.gif . The croakers are pretty thick in the James River. The bite has been doing better on the outgoing tide. As for the flat fish, THey have been reported in great numbers on incoming tide at the first island. Cutbait and gudgeons have been very productive. The small boat channel has also been holding some nice fish. On outgoing tide the 8 mile marker has done great on flat fish up to 5.5 pounds. Dont worry to much about catching bait before you start just get a couple dozen minnows and some squid. The croakers are biting that combo when drifting for flounder.

Tightlines and good luck.

I am new to the board and been stationed overseas for the last seven years, with gas prices are out of control and after doing some research, this is what I found out to help us with the rising gas prices. Apparently the state of VA will refund their fuel tax on a gallon of gas. I ve contacted Emily in the DMV (contact information listed below), and she seems very helpful in getting the states fuel tax refunded, if used in boats. Seems like alot of record keeping, but you may get an extra fishing trip at the end of the season..... She also needs the boats registration. Hope this helps. Thanks for the great board!!!!

Fuels Tax Refund
Motor fuel (gasoline and diesel) that is purchased and used in a recreational or pleasure boat or ship or used in commercial watercraft is eligible for a refund of all or part of the Virginia motor fuel tax that was paid. The Virginia tax is 17.5 cents per gallon for gasoline and 16 cents per gallon for diesel.
The fuel must be purchased in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the application must have receipts/tickets/invoices attached that show the:
1. Exact date of purchase, which cannot exceed 12 months prior to the date of application for refund;
2. Seller's name and address from which the fuel was purchased;
3. Number of gallons of fuel purchased (each purchase must be for 5 gallons or more);
4. Type of fuel purchased; and
5. Amount paid for fuel (diesel purchases must show the amount of state tax paid).
Photocopies of receipts and receipts marked duplicate are not eligible for a refund. Please be sure your receipts/tickets/invoices meet these requirements when applying for a refund.
Most marinas in Virginia sell diesel fuel that is dyed. Dyed diesel fuel is not subject to the Virginia Fuels tax and therefore, is not eligible for a refund.
The refund for fuel used in boats or watercraft can be requested from the Department of Motor Vehicles by downloading and printing the Application for Fuels Tax Refund for Fuel Used in Boats or Watercraft Form (TS-217).
Fuels tax refunds for agricultural uses, non-highway equipment and other uses permitted by statute can be requested on the Application for Fuels Tax Refund Form (TS-216).
The completed application with attached receipts/tickets/invoices should be mailed to:
Department of Motor Vehicles

sounds like a lota work but thanks ill check that out

Definitely NOT a lotta work. I just licked the envelope for usage on 2440 gals last year, lookin forward tom a little payback.... took about 20 minute to do the paperwork. BE SURE to get your receipts with the info needed each time you gas up. That being your name and number of gallons on the receipt. Lotta times your receipt only has the amount. Four years ago I didn't pay attention to the requirements and had half of 4000 gals rejected...

The reason they refund the money is that the tax on a gallon of gas goes toward the highways.

If you do not use the gas traveling the highway then you dont have to pay the tax.

Does the boat that you use have to be registerd in your name? Because I have a boat in my posession and have for about 6-8 months but it's not registered to me. The thing is I use it atleast twice a week putting in about 12 gallons a trip. 24 gallons X 52 weeks =A little bit of change back 1248 gallons at 2.30 a gallon. I am estimating that the state owes me atleast $160.00 if in fact I qualify.
