World Record Tilefish Photo

Yesterday, we left the tautog, croaker and flounder behind and took the Healthy Grin offshore to fish for sea bass and tilefish. We could not have picked a prettier day. My crew consisted of Craige Stallings, Bob Manus, Troy Warren, and myself. We spent most of our time on the 44-Fathom Wreck with a slow pick of nice sea bass. The fish were in the 2 to 4 pound range. Finally, we gave up hope of catching a limit and headed out to 50 fathoms to look for tilefish. We found a little hill out there and gave it a try. We found sea bass and plenty of them. We filled out our limit in a hurry. Again, nice fish with some pushing 5 pounds though I don’t think any made it. We were more interested in the tilefish we found mixed in with the sea bass. We were catching them as double-hitters with the sea bass. Bob Manus brought up a sea bass/tilefish double that we thought was huge. The blueline tile weighed close to 14 pounds. We managed to beat that mark when Troy cranked up his big tilefish. His fish weighed in at 15 pounds 12 ounces. All the paperwork is being filled out to enter this fish for the IGFA All-Tackle World Record. This is the first time I have targeted these fish. It was a lot of fun. Troy's pending world record is the first tilefish he has ever caught. In the group photo from left to right: Bob Manus, Troy Warren, Ken Neill, Craige Stallings.
