The day was so beautiful, I could not resist a short trip out after work. Hurried through the schedule, shortened lunch, and headed out the office door at 4:30. Headed on, checked the minnow trap and fished out a bunch of fat gudgeons, and headed out to the boat. Crab pots had some nice Jimmy's--steamed them up real quick before I left. Left Sunset Marina just after 5:30 with my wife and all four of the kids (9,7, 2, and 10 months) with the excuse of taking a little "family cruise". Had my wife drive the boat to a spot I had heard about near the jetty and wet two lines with squid and gudgeon samwich. It was on almost immediately. We started pulling in flounder after flounder from about 8-5 foot depth. Total of 8 keepers in about an hour and a half and about that many throwbacks. The boys got to reel in their first flounders and my wife was awesome at keeping us on the fish as they were holding in a pretty small area. Didn't have the camera on the boat, but took some shots at home. The doormat in the middle went right at 26", but I couldn't bring myself to let it go---I love fresh flounder too much. the others ranged right at 16.5 and up. Those Jimmy's are pretty big to give some perspective. Anyway, can't wait fro the the crab and flounder -fest tommorrow night.. Also saw a boat next to us pull in a 21" Grey trout on peeler.

Sounds like a great day on the water. I am taking my 3 year boy out tomorrow and plan on running out of Jamestown with my brother on his new 28 ft hydrasport. We were going to fish in the HRBT area and would like to know were that bite is located on the flatties. Any suggestions in that area would be appreciated. Thanks
Try the Norfolk side of HRBT, close to the ocean view jetty in shallow water. The Hampton bar should be starting to pick up about now, and will be on your way down river just before you get to the HRBT. Good luck. My sons caught their first flounders yesterday and were so excited we could hardly get them off to bed last night. Going to try again later today and this weekend, if the weather cooperates.
Good luck

How wonderful to get your kids excited about fishing. That will have payback for years to come. I speak from experience. My best times are fishing with my son and even though he's down in Charlotte it brings him up a couple times a year to go out.

Way to go Naved. It is good to know that there are some fish close to the marina. Congrats to your sons. It is truly a thrill to see the kids catching fish.

I'm glad to see you tried the spot. Like I said before just be careful of the surf fisherman. They are pretty good at casting those 6oz pyramids. Last week someone hit a really nice boat and by the time the boat got onto the beach to handle it that person was gone. To bad I didn't know the person because that was raking it a little to far
Thanks Kicknbass and Proline Gil. I forgot to give major PROPS to Kicknbass for clueing me in on the spot. You d'man!!!

I went to that location Sat. and I caught about 13 of the flatties. They were all to small to keep but it was a blast . I also caught a few croaker. I landed 2 flounder at the same time on a bottom rig. They were both right at the 16 in. mark. Maybe I would have caught some keepers if I could have served them up some of those squid/gudgeon samwiches. All I had was the squid so the big ones did not want the 1/2 samwich. Thanks for the location tip. What a agreat place to take the family.

Talking about flounder.....my buddies and I headed over to Wachapreague last weekend, we caught 3 fish in the 5lbs range and 6 in the 3-4lbs range. A total of 27 keepers......I'm looking for some recipes, so if you have'em I'd like to try them out.
tight lines!
