Full Version: Safety question on shoals

I have been out to the 9 foot shoals before when it is basically flat and very little wind on the way to the shoals and there are huge waves breaking at them. I am going there now at night for drum and coming out of Wallace's and don't want to make that run if conditions are bad. My question, are there certain winds or other conditions that trigger these huge waves that break on the shoals? Thanks

Wes

Also my two trips so far all I have caught are critters. Sat night I did catch two big rays that gave good runs one was about four and a half foot long and almost 3 foot wide.
FISHWATER
Good luck Wes. Usually after a hard Nor'east an outgoing current/tide and shifting winds to the WSW.
When we get those huge storm swells off the coast in the summer months and they roll in to the shoals there will be some pretty impressive breakers.....even on the calmest of days.

I've cut down on catching critters by not chumming so hard and fishing the most current. The only time I chum top, bottom is cobia fishing.
The way I see it the drum are all over the shoals searching the bottom for crab right now.

Best of luck and hope you catch em up!!!!!

Best leave lots of scope in the old anchor line, mate, as you don't want her nose pulled under in bigger waves.

Thanks for the replies.

I once saw a boat out there anchored by the stern on a flood tide, with two guys on the forward casting platform casting to the shoal. A coast guard statistic waiting to happen. A rogue wave can happen at any time in any conditions, and it wouldn't take much to swamp a boat anchored by the stern.

I heard someone drowned in the Elazabeth River in a Boatoig acident last night, hope it wasnt anyone from this site.
