I was wondering if anyone had advice on trolling cedar plugs. How far back in the pattern should they be trolled? Are there any favorite colors or trolling positions? What speed works best? I've caught most of my Tuna on ballyhoo and am looking at expanding my arsenal a little. Please chime in with your thoughts. fishing4.gif

I've typically pulled cedar plugs on the flat lines, about 25 to 30 feet off the stern of the boat. Dolphin and natural colors have worked for me in the past. They can be a favorite of the school sized yellowfin, ie 20 to 40 lbs. Sometimes it seems that's all they want and sometimes they won't go near them. Go figure. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Thanks, I have a bunch but haven't used them much. I'll give it a try and let you know how it goes.

I use Black Cedar Plug daisy Chains on my low Riggers and also use them on a Flat line or two.The Kings seem to like the Red and white ones the last time I went.Cedar plugs act best on a fast troll 9 to 12 Knots for the Blues ,I like Meat ,or Feathers for Yellows. They both like a 3' Drone on a Planer.

You want to take a good look at your propwash and have the plugs postioned about 2'ish to the outside of that wash. If you venture them beyond the a clean wash, too far back, they usually are ignored. Drag them in the wash and forget it...

Look for them to run in the clean/clear pockets in the sweet spot described above...

Yeah, some of the most pleasant fishing memories from 25-30 years ago come from bluefins hitting cedar plugs running about six inches past the twenty foot leaders we used .Dr Wright had transom clips that I would clip 'em onto, which settled them to run just right.Kings would hit 'em in that close, too. The 26 Mile Hill was a mecca for cedar plugs,as well as the Fish Hook and Hot Dog. How about Zukers? I have a ton of Zukers that used to be the DEAL! I bet those could be rigged with circle hooks, too. Might have to toss some on "Therapy",just for fun. biggrin.gif
