What's up with these biting flies? I have heard complaints over the radio but yesterday I got some first hand experience. It seems as the wind dies down the biting flies gear up. I couldn't keep them off me yesterday. Does anyone know any product that will keep them away? I've always heard a West Virginia woman will keep you warm in the winter and the bugs off you in the summer but that didn't work either. HELP!!

Skin So Soft bath oil,it works great but you smell like a Girly Man all day.Anything with DEET in it. Back Woods OFF also works. Skin so Soft works as good as anything on the market. So the next time the Avon lady comes to your door be nice.

Use something that has at least 50% deet. Otherwise within minutes they will be back on your skin.

if you use the skin so soft buy the one with sunscreen. If you use the regular Skinn so soft and get out in the sun it is like having mazola oil covering your body.
Avon has on in a stick and a spray theat has an SPF of like 30.
it is pretty good at keeping the flys off.

Maybe the next Liar's Club Meeting should involve an AVON Demo.

Is there a population explosion of these flies. They have not been an issue in the past but this year they are tearing my dogs to pieces. I don't want to keep putting deet on them because of course they lick it off.
Try living in Poquoson--we have critters that range from the huge biting horseflys to the infamous "noseeum's", with killer 'squito's and gnats in between. I need to by stock in Deep woods OFF, but even that stuff doesn't last nearly long enough. The lotion with the sunscreen in it is the best bet.
Oh, and not to be homophobic or anything, but an Avon lady at the M&G would be kindof GAY.

Not so sure Naved;
The one who works my area is a fox; perhaps I can get her there in a swim suit..

SSS is the ticket, but it is oily.
Those Eastern Shore Flies remind me of Alabama. The mosquitos down there bite through blue jeens, and we have these biting Gnats we call Buffalo Gnats. They drank bug repellant, SSS was the only thing that would keep them off.
This is why I have such good skin, all them nights camping out next to a river swamp while running trot lines covered from head to toe in avon SSS.

I was on a scuba trip in crystal river fl, and the steak house had outdoor tables to sit at while waiting for a table inside. Each table had a large bottle of skin so soft, we soon learned why it was there. After a few drinks the smell wasn't that noticeable!

At one time there must have been hundred flies on the outboard today. Also spilled a bag of ginger snapps in the boat and they swarmed them like a dead animal. Had to take and wash out the floor but it was too late they were already there.

It's actually funny to me that this thread has gotten so much attention but I feel that I too have something to add. Not only are they bad out in the bay while you are on your boat, but they are also murder at Sandbridge as of last week. I took my kids to the beach and those *#&$% flies ran us off as soon as I set-up the umbrella. That is no joke. These things actually drew blood. It was almost as bad as a trip I took to Sanibel island, Fl (but we had bug repellent which helped).
Maybe the mild winter is the culprit?
In addition, I went freshwater fishing last week @ Kerr Lake / lake Gaston and the freaking ticks were horrible too. I think I'd rather have the flies over the ticks. At least those bothersome bastards can't give you Lyme disease or Rocky Mounain Spotted Fever.
Hey it's all in the name of fishing right?

Hate to differ with an "authority" but there is NOTHING that will do a good job of repelling these flies, including 100% deet. I have tried about everything known to mankind, including SSS, electronic repellents, and Biting Black Fly Repellent available at
http://www.pestproducts.com/bitingflies.htmI have resorted to wearing mesh pants such as these

Good Luck!

I also keep enough fly swatters on board for everyone on the boat to have one. Last summer at the tower I could have sold them for about $50 each.

I bet the spade fish and the flies are in it together. They surface to get us throwing them food and while the flies are attcking they steal the bait. Or another thought is the spades are thinking Im sure glad we dont have to fight them things like those creatures in those floaty things up there are doing.

Best thing for those flies is a flipflop across the head!! Those things are a pain. May be they need to start shooting them instead of the seagulls!! Where's the Karate Kid when you need him???
As for the AVON girl...bring her along to the next M-N-G...we need some eye candy!!

You will notice that on the hottest days I will still be wearing long pants for that reason. Also, when anchored up,spend some time keeping things cleaned up,especially when chumming. Yes,flies have been extra bad,no doubt because of our mild winter. Ah,well.

Black Adder has the answer I think with the long pants. When I was young, I remember thinking my dad must be nuts to wear long pants and a long sleeve shirt when fishing. He had a pair of super lightweight pants (not jeans) and wore them to keep from getting too much sun. That might be a solution to the fly thing although as fierce as they are, I wouldn't discount the possibility of them biting through pants.

I put a spray on coat of SPF 36 Bulll frog and a second coat of SSS , had no worries all day. Now if they would only make a Shark repellent that worked.

Keep a rubber band in your pocket next time you go. They are pretty fast to try and swat which just makes me even madder, but they aint fast enough to avoid a well aimed rubber band shot. Doesnt keep you from getting bit but oh that sweet sweet revenge. Touche on the shark reppellent, too. I had to clock one of those bad boys over the head with a clam the other day to keep him from getting any ideas.

That is funny! I was going to say my beesuit works well but makes me look like an EPA inspector on a hazmat issue.
I've heard eating garlic and sipping vinegar the night before helps. Your sweat the following day stinks. But no good-luck cuddly the night before since more than flies are repelled!

Mega I laughed on that one all night long. My wife thought I'd lost my mind. Somethings just go strait to your funny bone.
The SPF 36 Bulll frog and a second coat of SSS sound like a formula for agent orange. Make sure your not cooking up some liquid cherknobal out there.
