Can anyone tell me how to use a casting net and where to use it? I'm coming out of Dix Creek into Lynnhaven Bay and sometimes out of Lesner...

best bet is to find bait busting on the surface and throw it at them. I have not been in Lynnhaven lately, but should be bait in there soon if not now.
There are many ways to throw a net, google some videos and try a few and practice. The smaller the net, the easier to spin it open. So you might want to get good using a 4ft net then get a bigger one.
With a smaller net, you will not have to coil the net with the rope, also making it easy to throw.
The method I use is similar to the way the second video shows in Beawolf's post, but instead of putting the net section over my shoulder, I put it in my teeth.
Just remember to open mouth when throwing, when i was a teen and had braces, I had it get caught in them a few times.
Stinging Jellyfish in the net, not cool either, same as casting a net with a crab still in it.
Just my 2 cents.

This is pretty much the way I do it. I do it slightly differently depending on size of net, or if Im hurrying to throw.

In addition to the sheer mechanics of throwing a net I would imagine that having someone watch you who really knows there stuff would help you a great deal. I too am trying to get the hang of throwing my new net, with plenty of difficulties. If I had someone to watch me and point out exactly where my hang-up was I would be doing pretty well, but instead my cast is very inconsistent. It is very hard to diagnose your own cast issues when all you have is the directions to compare yourself to.
Sidenote: I have a crazy schedule and often dump in at the Lynhaven ramp in the early afternoon on weekdays. During these times when there has been little to no traffic on the ramp there are baitfish all around the pier area, so dense at times that one cast of the net would give you more bait than you could use, hence the reason why I am trying my damnedest to master this castnet thing!

Maybe we can throw cast nets at our next meet and greet!!!!!!!
Jeff probably knows of a bar that would allow for this.

Been out back throwing mine for mosquitos and dog S%&*...mentioned the dog stuff because I brought in what I am sure my golden retriever would consider a keeper...I though I did an attentive walk through, but apparently I was wrong:blink: I went through the bett's method and all those mentioned here...with some difficulties. While out throwing my wife actually found the following link for me

:
castnet She walked out and took the net and showed me how it was done. My wife KICKS ASS! Anyhow, it was just as easy for me...you gotta try it this way, QUICK and EASY. Good luck!

You've been throwing in it! It's the creek you launch from the Lynnhaven ramp. It's OK though - I launched my skiff from there for a whole year before I learned the name. Of course that was back in the early nineties before they built the ramp.

Good idea on the meet and greet demo eric !! The seafoo dmarket would be fin e for that in the back lot. I find that throwing the net in your driveway is great practice.
