A buddy with a big 26ft Sea Ray asked me to go fishing with him on his boat. He had family and friends in town and wanted to take his boat out to the tower for spade.

He hit a log "last summer" and it took out his engine coupler, I guess its called. It is the linkage between the Engine and Outdrive. The marine shop also winterized the boat and this was the first trip since then. (First Mistake)

We left Rudee inlet at 0800 with a boat following us, They did not know the way to CLT. About half way there we lost speed, but normal engine RPM. We turned around and lost all forward movement. We opened the engine compartment and burnt rubber smell. He recognized it right away.

My first Question was " do you have Sea Tow" The answer was shocking "no" he said. "I have insurance through my insurance company for 150.00" (second mistake)

I have only been on this guys couch a dozen times drinking beer this winter Talking about Sea Tow like a Preacher talking about a Revival. Dont think about it, just get it.

600.00 was the bill for the tow. We took the boat home and unloaded it and drove to Little Creek, loaded up my boat and made the long trip out to the tower.

Got to CLT at around 3 pm. 5 boats there, 3 tries and we were anchored where we wanted. We caught about 10 fish, but when we became one of 2 boats out their, we moved right up next to the tower leg and started catching one every min. We kept only the first 10 for the big cook out.

Jeff calls me when im rounding Cape Henry on the way in, asking if I wanted to go fishing today. I was like dude, I need a break.

That stinks that he didnt have sea-tow...I broke down once in my life and after paying a towing charge of almost 500.00 I said to myself, ill never go another year without it. Maybe this lesson (a very expensive one at that) will change his mind about buying the sea tow memebership.

Im glad you guys still had a chance to get back out and catch some spades...Ive been wanting to go but everyday I have the chance, the weather hasn't been cooperative..
The spades you caught...any size to them?

Not a bad deal considering that a tow can be any amount. What if it was $2000.00. I had a buddy that broke down at the point and his tow back was over 2K. He had sea tow and it was free.

i believe if u r a sea tow member and are on someone elses boat who is not covered they will now tow that boat for free. im not sure boat us offers that. sea tow is 149 on the internet.

If you borrow the boat and you have sea tow, you are covered. The owner of the boat cannot be onboard. They will ask for the registration and everyone onboards ID if you try and do this. If the ID on the registration matches anyone onboard no deal.

I thought the same thing, but the rules were explained to me in detail when I asked.

Spent the night on a sand bar at Oregon Inlet in sight of the Coast Guard Station. Smart enough to not ask them to remedy my stupidity. Managed to get dislodged the next morning. Next step SEA TOW smile.gif
