Had today off so decided to try some fishing. Weather forecast as of 0600, winds NE 5-10, seas 1'. Checked the real time wind data at the 1st island and it was reading 10 knots with gusts to 12 out of the NE. Usually anything from NE over 10 keeps me in on my boat but I really wanted to go and since I'll be out of town this weekend, it was my only chance until next week.

Driving over the Lesner, seas look OK. Come out of the inlet an hour later and find 2' seas before you even hit the markers and white caps out on the bay. Watch a Pilot boat go out past the markers and can see it crashing thru the waves. More like 15-20 knots. Damn, time for a judgement call. Really wanted to try it but decided to just fish the inlet. The wind was figthing the tide so we were able to get some decent drifts across the channel near the Lesner. Put two flounder in the box at 17" and 21". Threw a few more back to fight another day. We then headed into the Lynnhaven and fished the channel by the house with the tennis courts and threw another 21" in the box. Came in early since we saw some black clouds forming.

Not a bad day since I got some fresh flounder for dinner but I wish the damn weather man would get it right for once.

Yeah its nice to have some fresh flounder and to put a couple in the freezer.

Andrew, they're still there. I caught the two keepers on the east side of the bridge in shallow water, maybe 15', about halfway between the Duckin gazebow (sp?) and the bridge. Probably could reach the area from shore. Caught everything on cutbait, mostly squid and some bluefish. I can't wait to catch some peanut bunker with the cast net and try the inlet. Its like candy to those flat ones.

Jeff, man your hard core. I watched a lot of boats come out the inlet, see the waves and turn around. We did watch one guy head out in a small (maybe 19-20') Bayliner bowrider. Looked like he was getting the crap kicked out him. Don't think I would go out in a Bayliner in that mess. Makos are good boats. Good to hear you got some spades and at least you had the wind at your back for the ride in.

Andrew,

Drive across to the Duck In side and turn left at the 1st light. If you drive back by the condos and bear to the left there is a small dirt lot which has a beach access trail. I have parked there before with no problems. Don't know if its legal but last time I checked it was not fenced in by the construction at the Duck In parking lot. May be a good option when the public parking at the ramp fills up.

Just ready to throw my 2 cents in....Is everyone else tired of seeing the figure "30% chance" from the freakin weather service. They might as well say " we don't freakin know...you figure it out, or don't, we don't give a damn either way". That figure: 30% is so safe yet so lazy! The weather service figures he will just say 30% chance of bad weather, that way if it is bad then he was right, or if not- then we are all pleasantly surprised. Compare your figures, review the local history over the last at least 2 years, i am sure that there are identifiable tell tale signs that can sway the chances +/- 30% by a good deal...you are the meteorologists, figure it out. If you can't find a new job...like fishing, that way you can sit out here and bitch about your previous employer/ co-workers like me. But seriously though, the last 3-4 times out, the prediction was not even close to being right...if the weather is going to be bad, just say so, leave the optimism to us!!!

Most of you sound like you are local with short drives to the lesner we drive 1 1/2 - 2 hrs to get there and decide what to do then. Last week it paid off was calling for it to be windy and wave 2-3. we got there and they were 1-2 and an hour on the water laid down to nothing the rest of the day. Our plan usually is go to the lesner and work our way back home till we find fishable water. HBT, JRB, Rescue, Tylet beach, hog island, Ben Harrison, Dutch gap, a local pond, on the couch watching fishing. If all else fails I know George P and Craig P our catching flounder on the tube, have that episode on DVR.
