Going out to the tower Saturday for some spades. Hear there is a tournament and expect even getting their early may not provide an ideal spot. Anyone got any coordinates for any productive wrecks or structure around the tower? I have heard of people fishing on wrecks for them to the north of the tower.

To tell you the truth, Ive never fished for them on any other wrecks. I have spearfished for them on the other wrecks. They are probably on all the tower wrecks and all inshore wrecks. They just are not as thick. I have fished mostly for spade at CBBT and CLT.
Im with you, Im not even thinking about Tower this weekend. Im going to try CBBT or maybe Thimble shoal light, then hit the fireworks at harborfest.

We have caught them at the Gulf Hustler many times.
I wouldn't waste my time at the Tower unless you leave Rudee at 4 am. You will catch them at the Tower Reef, and just about any other wreck--but I would consider using clam chum, or buying cans of cut up clam and throwing them in around your bait. I have talked to people that have caught them already at the 3rd and 4th island (but not consistently yet). Also, don't forget that the state record was caught at Wolf Trap Light (although that area will prob. be a parking lot as well).
Good luck.

Do you have the GPS coordinates for the Gulf Hustler? If so maybe we'll try it out.
Thanks!

I will try and pull it off the machine tonight. The pie pan thing is killing me. I am going to have to try it to see what type of reaction I get from the crew.
Gulf Hustler: 36 51.447N
75 35.702W
try this link, lots of good numbers.

Just pulled my coords off the boat. 36 51.664N 75 36.308W.
We have dove the site too many times to count. There used to be a 4 foot buoy tied to the wreck about 10' under the surface, not to hard to spot. See the buoy drop the wreck anchor. There are also some nice togs, seabass and flounder around this wreck. Dove on it one day and in the rigging (which has since collapsed) all you could see were kings.
This is a good wreck for the old saying....if you cann't catch them....shoot them. Mask fins and a spear gun, you can fill a cooler up.
Have seen some nice sharks cruising thru also, we could never get them to bite, maybe you will have some luck.
Hope this helps. Let me know how you do.
the gulf hustler is a long way to go for some spadefish. u can get them in a lot closer at many other places.

chum is over rated for spades. They are a stupid curious fish. Buy some disposable pie pans, make a "stringer" out of leader size material attaching the pie pans every foot or so with a weight on the bottom. Drop it in the water "after you tie it off to a cleat" and watch the fish come check it out. When you are fishing for spades and you see one try to eat your bobber you will then understand why I call them stupid curious fish.
So a pie pan every foot all the way to the bottom?
I do not use bobbers, so Ive never had them hit em. I usually in current, add or subtract lead to adjust depth of the clam.

The free AOL CDs you can get from wal-mart or K-mart

work good as well.
