Knot Too Fast
Dropped the boat in at Little Creek at 0630, and headed out. Brief storp outside the jetty to load up on small Croaker (job was done in about 15 minutes for the price of one strip of Bloodworn fishbite). Stopped at the bend to make a few drifts for flounder...NADDA. By about 0930, anchored up, chum bag in the water, a few chunks of menhaden tossed in, and two new rigs in the water with live croaker on them. BAM, right away one of the rods starts spooling. I let it eat for a few second and give it a good set. This joker made three spectacular runs and took a while to get in...only to find out its a cownose ray (never had one run like that). Not off to a good start. About a half hour later, the other pole takes off. Same deal, let him eat and set. After about 20 mins, my son and I are greated by a fished dressed in a beutiful brown suit (Net, measure, cooler, and on the grill tonight). It was not a big one (40") but we were on our first cobia trip and had success. We did end up catching one more about 30 minutes later but it was a throwback at 31" (the boy soloed that one).

Summary:

Gas: $40
Chum: $10
Menhaden: $10
The look on a 7 yr old boy's face when he sees his fist fish in a Brown Suit: PRICELESS!!!

Keep em Tight!

Brett,

Great story! action-smiley-033.gif Can't wait to get my 16yr old down here fm Maryland and show him some of the awesome fishing avail down here.

Bein' retired Navy I can use LCreek myself. I stopped by there before I got my boat and it seems like a good place to put in. Real nice folks inside.

Anyway, after stopping for bait where did you anchor and start chumming? Close to CBBT?

Wow, good on you! I have yet to make my first Cobia trip. I was thinking about it tomorrow but I'm sure it'll be a parking lot out there, not mention the heat. Well thanks for the inspiration.

Nice job Brett. Nothing beats the look on a young angler's face when something like that happens. Im sure your son wont forget it. And Im also sure he will want to go try it again.

Dave,

We were between the 12 and 13 mi markers about 300-500 yds off the bridge (ocean side). Once at the 12, look for are where the bottom comes from about 22 ft up to 15 ft rather quickly. Got the intel from watching one of Dr. W's videos (http://www.drjimsaltwaterfishing.com/index_files/Page544.htm) on the web. Pretty interesting and informative. I did everything they did (except eels...it was getting expensive enough and figured we would pass) and sure enough, it worked like a charm. Good luck and keep em tight.

Thanks Brett. I'll definitely give that area a try. Couldn't help but notice the DDG reference in your post. I was on WAINWRIGHT (CG 28), SEMMES (DDG 18) & ILLUSIVE (MSO 448). Did a med cruise on the latter....all the way from Chasn SC to Izmir, Turkey and back! Full speed ahead, 11 kts. Whew!

Anyway, I appreciate the tips and hope to see you on the water sometime.

Brett,

Way to go man! Any brown suit is a score in my book! Even better that you got to enjoy it with your son. action-smiley-033.gif
