Headed out of Lynnhaven this morning with my boys in search of cobia. With the NE wind and Black Adder's Thursday story, we headed for Latimer Shoals to get some wind/wave protection from the Eastern Shore. We were set up and chumming by 7 with only one boat in sight. Left at 10 AM with only a couple of bluefish (crashing our live bait party) and a skate to show for our troubles.
There must have been 25-30 boats anchored up when we left. Buouy 16 looked like a party platform with folks all over it.
We chummed hard with fresh menhaden, plus a bag of menhaden milk plus oil, plus fresh crabs ground in for good measure. Baits were cut bait, eels, live spot. Radio chatter sounded like no one was doing anything. I hope someone caught a few later on.
One question. I seemed to get a bit more swing on my anchor line than I usually do if I am set up out at IMG. I don't think it was just a tide change either. The back of the boat just liked to sway to the left and then back to the right a good 15-20 feet each way. Kind of a pain with several lines out and chum hanging high and low on the sides. Anybody have any thoughts?? Is it the length of my anchor line?? Too long/short?

sounds to me like you were hooked up in an eddy or something. too bad you didnt get a hook in one!

We had partial success at Bluefish rock yesterday. Went out at 6 am and anchored in 18 ft near a little drop-off. chum on the bottom, menhaden oil on top and chunks going in every few minutes. Live eels, live bunker, and 2 guys fishing for spot/croaker for additional live bait. Catch a small blue, and in he goes--hit almost immediately near the chum bucket and it's on--very large fish made several tremendous runs, finally heading straight under the boat. I think he abraded the line (50 lbs powerpro), because after about 15 min, it broke. Never got to see the fish......
Next run was a several hours later at tide change. Large live eel, also near the boat on the bottom goes off. Also a very large fish in the 70lbs class. We get him near the boat 4 times--definitely a huge cobia--excitement all around---, we tried to net him several times, but just out of reach, too green to try and gaff initially, then just out of reach as she tired--but alas, she finally spit the hook somehow and got off. We ran out of eels and the croaker fishing died off too, so we headed in around 12.
So, we didn't put a fish in the boat, but the fact that we hooked up at least one and prob. two made us feel good and good to get some severe pullage--have never fought a fish like that before. Defienitely planning to try again soon.
By the way, saw several nice fish boated around us--at least four or five--so it seemed like the right place to be, at least yesterday.

So you did not know for sure if it was a cobia?... Pretty good indicator is if it comes to the top right after you hook it.. If it doesnt, its probably wasnt a cobia... Maybe a huge cownose or shark.... Every cobia I have ever caught came to the top... Sounds like a overall good day though.. Cant wait till my boat gets out of the shop so I can put in some time... We were first boat there. We were chumming by 6:30 and also had limited luck. I think we caught a BABY hammerhead shark (will post picture for confirmation when I get it) and a small cobia right around 10am. Didn't see any of the boats around hook up. BTW - Latimer shoal is miles long but the 25 boats anchored up were all in a little bunch right where we started, except for the pod on 16.
Oh yeah - The wind and current were fighting most of morning and may explain your anchor difficulties.
