If you mostly want to target Mahi, is it better out Oregon Inlet or off Va. out of Rudee? Also is it better just to drag a bunch of single ballyhoo rigs? Are the spreader bars only for tuna? When I fished in Key West, they used only singles, and one bird teaser right behind the boat, also one down rigger. I know the down rigger was for wahoo and kings.
Thanks Guys!

Erick,
In general the best would be outta Hatteras, since they have that warm gulf stream so close, not to mention its there all year. That being said, the water up here is primed for Mahi. I like to pull green and yellow, either poppers (getreellures.com) or green and yellow seawitches. The bigger ones ussually come charging in by themselves and they will hit just about anything. I like to look for weed pads, and then switch to light tackle for maximum fun on the bailers. I have heard talk on the radio of Dolphin being spotted at the tower (morelikely out past the triangle wrecks) so there here, go and get'em

Definitely NC to target dolphin. They're bailing them right now in Hatteras.

I would drag baits just like you would for tuna. Green and yellow look like other dolphin to them and blue and white look like mackeral. Rig with ballyhoo. Troll past anything floating in the weeds. On the way out I would stop at anything floating in the water past the tower and look for mahi. Throw out some cut ballyhoo and see if you see any attack it.

We ran up on grass line only 17 miles out and caught gaffers ! The weed lines are moving closer.

If you look at the oregon inlet fishing center website and then photos, the docks are full of mahi this week, some bulls, gaffers and peanuts.

Hatteras is by far the best out of VA and NC. All you have to do is find a weed line and you can bail as many as you want. If you want the bigger mahi then you want to troll around 50 to 75 yards off of the weedline. That is where the bigger fish hang out. Green, yellow, and pink are my favorite colors. Hope this helps

Erick,
You can mix up the spread with singles(ballyhoo), lures, Mini Bars, etc. Bright colors seem to attrach dolphin more. We caught some the other day on a cedar plug in the propwash.
Good Luck and let us know how you do.
Catch'em Up!!
