Full Version: what kind of hooks?

afternoon anglers . need help on gear selection have been using circle hooks for a time now and have noticed that a lot of possible fish have been getting away on hook set. are the circle hooks not getting in deep enough before i set the hook. am i setting to soon. useing the one one thousand two onethousand count then set. any thoughts or helpfull info will be apprecated.

You just revealed your problem in your thread.Never set the hook when useing Circle hooks.You just increase the drag and reel.The fish will set the hook for you.Circle hooks pull out if you try to set them,forget about the 1,2,3 set method and you will stop missing fish.

the other problem is u r using circle hooks for cobia and flounder....i use circles for drum only, but thats just me

I've had excellent luck with 4/0 Kahle hooks for flounder. That's what I use to make all of my flounder rigs.

Dr. Phill couldn't of explained it better.
Take Mega's advice. I've caugt my biggest cobia on a circle hook and would not have changed it for the world. Circles are great hooks just tell your instinct not to set it. It is hard when you hear the drag screaming; however, just tighten down and hold on. Tight lines..... food-smiley-015.gif
