We took the boat down to Hatteras for a week to cash in on the short run to the stream. Ended up fishing 4 days out of 7 due to inclement weather (a hard sw wind really tears it up down there). Caught 50-60 dolphin during our stay, with most being bailers caught on spinning rods throwing a naked balyhoo in the bubbles while trolling. 3 nice dolphin over 20 pounds, one bull around 30. Caught 6 king mackearl, all 15-25 pounds. 1 wahoo and a dozen or so bonito, as well as a shark rounded out our catch. We did jump off a white marlin, as well as raised a sail, but couldnt get a bite.

Also saw two waterspouts storm.gif
will try to get some pics on here soon

all action occured less than 30 miles from the inlet.

Pretty work!! I need to go down there and get into those Kings.
Big_Eye
20 -30 fathoms is filled with kings. We probably had a dozen bite offs a day, even w/ 2 hook ballyhoo. Good luck

Nice work! If you can get to it, good fishing is close. If the drop was closer in to us, everybody would be up here! By the way, Virginia Beach got Hot Spot mention for Dolphin in the latest Saltwater magazine!
Tight lines.

I found it kind of odd to be the hotspot in all the world for Mahi. Maybe those weedlines are forming better? I was thinking about driving down to Hatteras to catch em. Maybe it was the lure of the short boat ride.

I still visualize catching more down there for some reason.

I would have to say Hatteras takes the cake on dolphin, at least in numbers

such a short ride too. We caught bailers off dead grass in 70 ft of water maybe 6,7 miles from the sea buoy.

Eric,

I agree I don't see VB being any better than Hatteras, its probally all political and the VB Hotel and Motel Assoc. is paying for the mention. Have you seen the big ad in the back pages of Saltwater?

It always seems like theres better surf and better fishing in Hatteras

How can VB be a better place for Mahi when there arent as many and you have to go twice as far to get one?You just cant believe everything you read .
