Thanks for posting my picture. Also, thanks to all of our members for the congrats
.
That white line on the picture is the 130 lb fluoro leader we were rigged with. The abrasion resistance was amazing, as it held up for the entire three hour fight. I saved it and it is totally wrecked, but it never parted. We intentionally pushed up the drag to break off the fish at the end.
Just a word about BaitMaster ballyhoo. The marlin hit a blue and white Islander Black Hole that was rigged with a medium BaitMaster ballyhoo. We put that bait in at 0700 and it had grassed up at least 4 times and was reeled in and cleaned throughout the day. The marlin hit at 1340 so the bait had been working almost 7 hours before the blue hit. Hard to overstate the quality of those baits.

Kent,
Sure it wasn't one of those rubber Hoo? That's great performance on the bait. Do you brine them any extra? Glad you guys had a blast!
Tight lines.

Thanks for your compliments.
Short answer, yes I do brine them additionally the night before, also mixing in baking soda, but there is more to it than that. I read a detailed article in Marlin magazine on bait prep and their suggestions seem to work extremely well. 1) NEVER EVER let a bait touch any fresh water whatsoever. It significantly promotes decay of the bait. 2) Keep the bait COLD at all times, unless it is fishing in the ocean. This means also while you are rigging. Keep all baits on ice while you are rigging and select one to prepare and rig and immediatly return it to the ice, NEVER letting the temp rise. 3) In addition to squeezing out the "poop", remove all of the guts and swim bladder. There is a small tool available from Tournament Cable (see their website) for doing this, it works perfectly. They also have a rigging video, which I highly recomend, which explains the purpose and use of this tool and other of thier rigging tools.
Bait performance, paticularly the swimming action from removing the guts and air bladder and endurance is substantially increased by these steps. It takes a little more time but 1 or 2% improvement can go a long way.
Just my thoughts. After that Blue, "I ain't changing nothin that got him""
