Sorry to hear about your experience. Unfortunately, fishing gear is stolen in the Outer Banks area a lot. It tends to be high dollar stuff and trusting people like yourself leave it in their boats and rod holders on their car. You and I don't behave that way and we are always surprised when someone else does.

Check pawn shops. tackle shops, and watch ebay.

That sucks Cat!!! Hopefully something will turn up that will lead to you finding out who took your stuff...I'd watch E-Bay for someone trying to sell them.

Man, sorry that the bad side of human nature bit you. Its getting so you can't even leave gear in the boat the night before, even if you're staying onboard. Some low life will sneak aboard and steal something. We'll keep a watch out for your stuff hitting the market. Check Bite My Sister for replacement rods, your insurance money will go further. Its tough to replace the stories those rods and reels have for you though. Take care.

Will be watching for them - sorry to hear the bad news.

I curse thieves everytime I remove my electronics from their mounts.

May they all die.

There is nothing worse than a person who steals from another person. The prison system does nothing to discourage this. We should go back to the days of public humiliation for non capital offenses.

Eric,
Nothing more humiliating than having your hands cut off in the Town Square and everybody throwing stones at your sorry ass as you run into the wilderness!

When you treat only their mind it's tough to truly know if they can again be trusted. But see a man with no hands, you'll know whether to trust him.

When I was in Desert Storm I drove about 300 miles in the Saudi desert to watch a public execution (beheading). Do you think that might be a little too good for this tackle stealing SOB? I do!

Crack heads do it ...... they will steal anything not tied down ....

smilie_daumenneg.gif Sorry to hear about that, thats like stealing tools needed to make a living. There have been alot of thefts of boating items lately (mostly props). Most criminals are very dumb and try to pawn items like that. I always scratch my initials into obscure places on items like that.

My equipment and entire boat (38 ft Sullivan sportfish) was stolen last year from my slip @ Rudee. I can tell you that the tackle shops won't sell/resell used equipment to help curb the market for stolen equipment. You best bet is to watch Ebay and the local rags/classified as there are no Pawn shops in OXB. The cops wanted serial #'s which I didn't have last year. They are all on my policy now though and I recommend everyone record the serial # on reels that have them as it is the only way to identify your stolen reels from mine. The cops were useless in my experience. They turned the case over to the auto theft department who started asking me about where my boat and equipment may have been trailered to and hiden in a garage. For the rest of you.....document you reel numbers and add them to your boat policy which will prolly require a rider specific to fishing equipment. I picked up an additional 5K of coverage for $89/per year in the event it happens again. I'd call the pawn shops in So. VA and leave them your contact # in the event you get lucky. Hopefully the readers of this thread can learn from our losses.

A couple of years ago I had my boat in the shop at a dealer in Hampton and someone (I suspect a mechanic) took exactly 20 gallons of gasoline. I know this because my flow meters will measure consumption to the ounce. This was during striper season. I picked the boat up assuming I had a full tank and went out of Rudy for the day. When I came in and filled up I expected to need 30 gallons - instead I needed 50.

Big deal someone may say - what's 20 gallons. I was just thankful it wasn't during off-shore season and I needed that extra 20 gallons which I thought I had to get around a storm.

I equate this experience with someone stealing a horse in the wild west. String the bastard up!

Good info. I think I'm gonna take note of all my tackle.

I used to wonder after having a few things stolen how it would feel to actually catch someone stealing.

I caught a guy in my jeep stealing a radio a few years back when I lived in a apartment. I yelled at him from the balcony (mistake) he then took off when he saw I had an AK-47 in my hand. He seemed scared.

I had my house broken into in Jax in 97. 3 months later I found my Dive BC in a pawn shop. The guy who pawned it was a friend of a brother of my friend. He did 5 months of a 9 month sentence. I received a subpoena in the mail when i was in the Persian Gulf to appear in his trial. I do not know what they wanted me to say, I probably would not have been the best person to speak on his behalf.

Thieves suck, bottom line.

Just a thought...If you still have the original box your reels came in you might also still have the tag that records the factory drag setting and serial numbers of your reel(s). All Va. Pawn shops are required to provide a daily list of the serial numbers for all pawned items. If you can provide the cops with that info they might be able to find the sorry C*#K Sucker. Good Luck!

there is nothing worse than someone stealing hard earned fishing equipment. my brother in law and i got a bunch of stuff stolen from his garage in florida. they theifs knew what they were doing and only took the high end stuff. biggest problem was the cops, they did not believe us ... and we did not have serial numbers and proof. now i take pictures of my stuff and keep a list of serial numbers.

we will all keep out eyes out ...

Really sorry to hear about the loss Cat Attack. They used to hang horse theives, maybe we need to resort to the same. Can you post a little more info, ie the color of the rods? If your 50's were on red rods, then I'll know to check them out if I see them for sale.

Yeah, and your aint catchin no crackhead either. My buddy was a police offficer working survaliance in DC. He and his partner were in a van when they heard someone trying to break in the vehilce they were using. You could only imagine the look on his face when he opened the back door and had a 12 gauge pointed at his face.

I would have loved to have seen that...what a truck to break in to!! yikes.gif
