Had a good weekend on the bay. Got down to VB around midnight on friday. At the docks at 0430 on saturday to resolve a warning alarm that had been going off on the outboard. The problem ended up being an easy fix (stuck float on the sensor in the oil reservoir on the engine).

Now for the fishing. Caught 5 or 6 dozen menhaden in the river before heading out for flounder. Trolled for spanish on the way to Cape Henry, no luck. Got to the cape henry wreck by 0745. First drop for my buddy (who had never been out for flounder before) and he hooks up with a nice 19" flounder. Fished for flounder until 1000. Picked up 7 in total, 6 keepers that were up to 20". Headed over to the 4th for some spadefish action. Picked up a few blues that came into the chum slick and got our first taste of spadefish. We picked up 9 in total the biggest was about 7lbs. We definately perfected how to miss those fish. It was about 5 or so and noticed some water on the deck and realized the winds had churned up the bay pretty good and we were taking some waves over the bow. The anchor was hung on a rock and had to be sacrificed.

Went out today, same drill minus the engine alarm. Went to cape henry and picked up 3 flounder to 21". Headed to the 4th around 1030 and started fishing spades. Saw a few divers close to the rocks pick up a few spades. The water was exceptionally clear. Missed our fair share of fish and/or lost them once we hooked up and finally managed to get one before having to head in.

All in all a good weekend.

Spadefish were all caught on clams.
Flounder were all caught on menhaden.

Got my boat back out of the shop Friday. Want to try for spades this weekend if weather permits. Sounds like they are still going good on the CBBT. Did you catch them right up in the rocks or were you at the end on the pilings?

Glad to hear somebody had some action. I went out yesterday late morning for the ebb tide. I got out to the 1st around 11AM and found a nice stiff wind (15+) out of the SW. With the wind and waves, I decided that 1st and 2nd was as far as I would go in my 17'. Fished until 3:30 or so and managed only a few small flounder and probably two dozen large croakers which I threw back. The current was ripping. Over the tube, the drift was 2.4 knots, trolling speed, the only place I could find a drift less then 2 knots was oceanside of the 1st but I've never caught anything there. Used cut tube squid. I guess I will have to search out some live menhaden for my next trip. First time I was able to get out in over a month so it was nice just to be on the water but some flounder would of made it that much sweeter.

We got into the spades by the 4th island, ocean side. it seemed like the closer to the rocks the better. on saturday we were about 10-15yds off the rocks and did really well. on sunday we were about 25yds off the rocks and didn't do as well. on sunday we saw some spearfishermen in amongst the rocks and they each speared two fish each in the 30mins we saw them there. (a heck of a weekend to forget the speargun)

our rigs were simple. a sz.1 octopus hook, 4ft. of 30# fluoro, barrel swivel, small crimp on split shot right above the hook, small chunk of clam, and a slip bobber about 5-6ft. from the hook.

Good report, Globko. Thanks.

GLobko,

You forgot the part about me falling in the river due to your inability to properly dock the boat.

Great stuff. Looks like the cheap anchor is going in the boat. Lost a couple in the rocks last year.

Gobko,

You mention in your post that you caught/used menhaden. I've got a cast net and I'm wondering where to go and put some in the live well.

Were you anchored or drifting the CH wreck?
Lord Spadington
Navy Dave,

I was mating the vessel Globko was captaining. We got our bunker in the Lynnhaven river. early in the morning it full of them. Not in big schools yet. But when its calm you can see them making wakes on the surface.
