Went out today around 9 in the morning dropped the boat in the mobjack bay and ran out to the point comfort lighthouse got on the east side and drifted for a while not too much happening so we decided to move out a little farther to the wolftrap dumping ground supposed to be a couple wrecks out there but we couldnt find them, fished the area for a while got one nice blue a couple nice sized flounder but no keepers agian the usual croaker and as my luck has it we got into some more of these sand sharks, startin to get bored with the sharks though would like to start bringing some fish home to eat, fished that for a couple hours then trolled up to the wolftrap light (or at least what I thought was the light) didnt get anything on the way up rode the outgoing tide for a couple hours and caught a couple big croaker but I am not a big fan of em so they went right back in the water caught a 42 inch shark biggest one yet If I can get a big enough shark I am gonna cut it up and cook it see how it eats I have heard both good and bad on the sharks but either way still waiting for a big one hehehe. Water was flat as a pancake on the way out and no wind was quite warm on the water and temps hovered around 83 degress, we fished in water between 20 and 35 ft deep but I am having a hard time finding some structure, just not in the right places I guess still feeling out the boat, called it quits around 230 and there was a nice breeze but it did pick the chop up a bit and had a bumby ride home but nothing to bad. anyway all and all a good day of fishin, better than workin but I gotta find some fish to put in the cooler.

You're paying your dues and putting in the time. The meat will come. As far as sharks go, preparation in the boat will go a long way to how they taste. If you catch spiny dogfish, there is no size limit, so you can keep one or two to try. Bleed them immediately and gut them if you can, then pack with ice. When you get home, use pliers to pull the skin off and filet or steak. Steaking is easy since they have no bones, only cartilage. Leave the skin on belly strips and use for flounder baits--has been very productive for me.

As far as the taste, personally I could take it or leave it. Edible, but in my opinion not in the same category as rockfish or flounder. I might even fry up a fresh croaker before I eat shark again.

Good report. Have you tried larger bait (keeps the croaker off). I use 2 or 3 different color bucktail/flounder rigs with a squid/minnow sandwich (also keeps croaker off).

NJ1 is correct on the sharks. Take care of them on the boat first. Flavor is better. Not as good as rock but not bad on the grill or cooked in butter and seasoned to taste. I think "Old Bay" can make any fish taste great.

If you're trying to get flounder fish the drop-offs. Water temps being what they are, flounder are probably in deeper water as it is cooler there. Try water in the 40 to 50 deep range and fish the channel edges. Use long leader from your three way swivel. I Use leaders from 36" to about 8 feet long (trolling as slow as I can go when tide is slack).

If you tie your own rigs get some small Colorado spoons and clevises and put them on ahead of your hook. Cabelas has a Salt Water Tackle catalog that I buy a lot of piece parts from and tie up my own rigs. I buy my beads by the bag at Ben Franklins for less than a $1 per bag. That way I am only spending from about $.25 to $.75 pre flounder rig rather than the $2 per rig at the store.

Spanish mackerel - late in the day troll 00 Clark spoons. I use both the silver and gold. No Leader. Line no larger than 20 lb test and a #1 planer with 15 to 20 feet of line from the planer to the spoon. Troll at about 5 - 7 mph. Put a 3 - 4 ounce trolling sinker in front of two baits and then pull two more on planers. Note what the fish like and switch to that color. They also hang out on the edges of channels and such. Troll around York Spit Light and the York Spit channel.
