Fished the SE lumps Sat 8/26 on board Freedom. We worked our way through our usual course up the lumps south to north and picked up a nice Wahoo. Kept trolling North East out to the southern tip of the Cigar. The Mahi were smacking the 2 green/yellow cedar plugs flatlined in the center of the wake but they couldn't get themselves hooked as the plugs were the large 7 inch ones. Didn't have small plugs or we'd have caught a few medium mahi's. Flying fish were everywhere so we reset and ran a spread of small/meduim blue/white Islanders from 11:00am till 4:00pm. We trolled up ten Mahi between 7-10 lbs on the blue/white islanders. We had 3 billfish in the wake but couldn't feed them a bait despite having the rod in-hand for one of the swipes. All in all a good day with 10 Mahi and a nice Wahoo.

Great job....a 10# mahi won 8,100 dollars in the Va Beach Billfish Tournament...Those small Mahi will also eat up a naked ballyhoo with a smaller hook in the rig....they usually do that to me when I'm fishing for billfish..>Bob

Great work Guys, sounds like a full day!

Bob,
What happened to the 14.1 Mahi we watched being weighed in and photographed on Saturday? They were on the Princess Lilly at the big boat slips. Anyway...never laugh at a Mahi, even the baby 5 pounders are worth cash...right Felix?

Mahi that size eat up the ballyhoo behine our boat also......we were running a billfish spread for whites. The kewl thing was that they all came in from the sides 200 - 300 feet outside the wakes.......you could see them greyhounding straight to the cedar plugs. The small & med Mahi's usually hit my dink bait behind the teaser which is either a naked hoo or a Islander Jr (which is what we were running that day) so it was interesting so see them going straight for the cedar plugs. I bought a few small ones from Capt Harrys for next time.
Sounds like we ate a fish for dinner that may have been in the money had we been in the tourney......figures. Had we been in the tourney however I'm sure we'd have been feeding the Fat Abert all day long with nothing good to eat.
