Finally got to spend a day in Lynnhaven searching for specks. Good news is they are there. Bad news is not everywhere all the time. You need some luck to get on them but if you do, you can have some fun. We got 8 keepers between 1.5 and 3 lbs. and lost several nice ones right at the boat. We also caught a few undersized fish but nothing like the last year. Baits didn't seem to matter. Any color grub or mirrorlure seemed to do the trick. Question: I hung into something that would have spooled my reel if it hadn't thrown the hook. I couldn't do anything but hold on. The guy in the boat next to me said it was probably a big Puppy Drum. I thought it could have been a big striper. If it was a speck it was the mother of all specks. Any ideas?

Two years ago, I was fishing for specs in Lynnhaven at dawn. Only got one bite, and it came just before I was ready to leave, around 9:30 am. It was a 34 inch striper. That fish made the day. Another time, I hooked a huge ray. I know it was a ray, because I got him to the surface twice--then he spooled my reel.

The line spooler was probably a puppy drum. I scored a 26" 9lb1oz a few weeks ago from under Lesner. Thank God for Power Pro and a good Capt. for chasin him down. The first five minutes or so I couldn't gain any line. It took 25-30 minutes to boat him on a 6'6" light action spinning rod spooled with 10lb (2lb dia.) Power pro.

I'm glad to hear they're still out there. I'm hoping to make it out today.

Yep, the speck action has been really good and only getting better. I had my best night I can remember Monday. Lots of fish around 3lbs...fat and healthy. Been a really good year for em. Make sure you throw some back...just to pretty to kill for me.
