Can someone explain what a wireline is and how to use it?

The advantage of using wireline instead of regular monofilament line is it allows your bait to sink faster due to its small diameter and is more durable around structure. Your rod and reel need to be setup for wireline or it will tear your rig apart. Your rod needs to have roller guides and your reel needs to have Dacron backer on it.

You also want to use a heavier weight on the wire line, mostly anything from a 10 to a 32 ounce weight so you can bounce it off the bottom. Look for bait marks on the fish finder, once you see some mark of bait and fish, be ready, you are most likely to hook up. Few pointers as well if you are going to try this...Never walk away from the wire line rig once set, always have someone hold the rod at all times incase you get hung on the bottom.....once you feel the weight hit bottom, dont crank up just yet, bounce it at least more times to see if you still hit bottom, if not let more line out until you mange to stay on bottom...once you hit the bottom about 3-5 times, reel up 2 or 3 cranks, about every 10 seconds let it hit bottom again, most of the time when you go to hit bottom, that is when your hook-ups are going to happen....also, you need to run this on a 3 way swivel, 5ft of 50-80lb test going to the sinker, you dont want the heaviest lb test out there, you want it somewhat light but not to light incase you get hung, I'd rather lose a sinker than a $10 dollar lure....and 15-20ft of 50lb leader going to your lure......if you are going to try wire lining for your first time, you may find it frustrating, I sure did, but time after time you will get use to it...it is hard in the beginning but you will get use to it and will put fish in the box...the lures of my choice are a chartruse bucktail with a white grubtail and my favorite is a 6''bunkered color storm lure.....I love to wire line because while holding the rod, you get to feel the fish strike your lure and what a feeling that is.......Hope this helped, good luck to you, Tight lines
PS You can find good wire line combos at any bait and tackle store for a good price.

The best way to learn about the wire line trolling is to visit with Anthony Whitehurst at Princess Anne Distributing on 17 Street, Va. Beach. He can get you set up and explain how to do it. Telephone number 757 428 1000. He has been selling the right stuff since the 70's when only a few of us did it! Watch out for the Sinker Monster!
