BillableOurs headed out Sunday with Andrew, Matt and Justin aboard, with Don working the Pit. Our plan was to run south to the Line after some encouraging reports. The timing for a flooding tide was just right. Wave action was picking up a bit on the run down, sky started clear and beautiful, but as you know the temps are all out of whack for this time of year.
From Damneck to the Golfball we picked up great marks for both fish and large concentrations of bait, put a mark over that spot. We ran further south towards the armada that was forming off False Cape, but more marks made us pull up and drop lines at the Southern Condos off Sandbridge. The fish were slow to bite and we had a full spread of everything, plus a lure or two still in development. Took a while but the first fish hit on a Chart. Mojo, nice healthy 40" fish with Justin at the crank. Still Thinkin was working to our South and had a few fish from the scattered bite down there. Those guys fought it out with the fleet but got tired of the amateurs who can't seem to share even an ocean without crossing bow or stern at close quarters. Fatbeard prepared the Boarding Party, but Bob opted for running North towards us to save the bloodshed sure to follow.
We also pulled up to work a bit North when Still Thinkin ran past. We stopped just after Bob dropped in and got on fish again...guess what, at our first gut feeling spot! Those guys can pull fish out of anywhere and have fun doing it too!
The bite was still scattered and slow, but most action was late morning through noon for us. Felix the Cat with Donna Sea on board were running south closer to the beach and were called in to our area. Great to see that fishing team out there as well. Our next fish came on an experimental spoon pulled on mono in the long center position. Back about 250-300 feet on mono it was working great as planned, getting down to the fish and giving a nice throb to the rod tip when trolled in our 1.5-3 knot range. Even in a slow bite with a full offering of umbrellas, mojos, and tasty imitations, the new spoon whacked a nice 38" Striper. The crew was as excited as I was to have that lure produce!!! we'll be adding to the proof soon.
The circle of VBSF friends out on the water, on the radio, on the cell phones, and yelling from boat to boat made the day. Fishing should be fun, catching is a plus, fishing friends...priceless!
Tight lines.
Dave
