I was just reading an article at saltwater sportsman and they were talking about goldfish bread to live 2 hours in salt water. Apparently there is a legal issue in some states. Anyone know more about fishing for striper with these things? Is it legal in VA/NC?

"Banned in some states, touted in others, the Black Salty has become the talk of herring-less cow towns in the northeast."

"These baits are highly effective, especially if there is good current or when used at the surface," he says. "Their big body and small tail make quite a racket up on top."

I think you are allowed to stick a piece of dynamite in a goldfish and it is legal, FISH ON !!!

I was asked to test these for flounder fishing here 2 years ago. They did catch fish, but no more effective than the native bait fish. After about an hour in the salt water the black salty bait was near dead. This was expected, however many baits were lost because the have soft lips. Overall I concluded the native bait fish was a better choice for bait and a little less cost.

Years ago when I lived in Northern NC and fished the ICW and sounds for striper, we used these gold fish from time to time. The only reason we didn't use them all the time was the cost of them. They were sold in a bait and tackle shop in Coinjock, nc, on 158. If I remember right they were about a buck 25 a peace. As you can see, this can get to be a pricy choice of bait. However, we had great success with them. When rattle traps, jerks, and bucktails wouldn't work, a few dollars came out and fish went in the cooler. They may not live long in the saltier water, but If I have a bait down for an hour and nothins happenin, I moving something; either to another bait or to another location. If they are there, they definitely eat a strange, fancy tailed, big eyed gold fish. That just has to T-BONE to a striper or even flonder, for that matter. Give it a try next time, if yo udon't mind spending a few bucks. animal-smiley-017.gif animal-smiley-017.gif animal-smiley-017.gif animal-smiley-017.gif animal-smiley-017.gif animal-smiley-017.gif

I haven't even looked for them locally. It's been years since I even thought about them, until this post. I would try some of the tackle shops that are more a fresh water fishing shop. You may have better luck with those kind.
