As I seem to only have good luck catching croakers, I'd like to know when they make their return to the bay?

Check out Chesapeakebay.net/atlantic_croaker.htm
It says they spawn in the ocean and come into the bay starting now.
You should be able to catch rockfish. They are everywhere in the fall and will take a bucktail or plug. Try a white and green bucktail or chartruse plug on the bottom. I went out with my brother to the CBBT in december and they were all over the place.
The shallow part of the MM tunnel south of the small boat channel (suffolk side) is not fished much and October and November at night I have caught 50 legal fish in a few hours. I think the bait is attracted by the lights. Sometimes it's crazy there are so many fish jumping and breaking the surface it's louder than the cars.
Anywhere from 18 to 26 inches. The water is only 12 feet deep so you only need 3 or 4 ounces of lead on a 3 way with a bucktail and you will catch fish. Just slow troll the pilings. Some nights are better than others but usually there are a few there.
