Mid Bay Region:
There does not seem to be much going on in the middle bay region except perhaps some possible catch and release action at the Calvert Cliffs Power Plant warm water discharge. The word “possible” is used here because veterans who fish this site for the first large striped bass coming up the bay have learned the hard way to keep the chatter down to a minimum about this confined site. It takes a skilled captain at the helm to be able to swing quietly and unobtrusively near the wash for a successful drift. It also takes all involved to understand the effect engine noise has on the striped bass and cooperation in maneuvering to make it all work to everyone’s satisfaction. Jigging close to the bottom with large BKD’s or Bass Assassin’s is the way to fish here and anglers should be prepared to feed a lot of tackle to the snags below.
Most fishermen in the middle bay region have been working the upper sections of the tidal rivers for the large white perch that are holding in some of the deeper holes waiting for water temperature conditions to be right for their spawning runs to the very upper most reaches of the rivers and creeks. Anglers are using bottom rigs often with two bait hooks or tandem rigged small jigs. Bloodworms or grass shrimp are the most popular baits but bloodworm flavored Fishbites or pieces of nightcrawler will work. Some of the old veterans even mix cut up nightcrawlers with cut up bloodworms to get some of the bloodworm juice on the nightcrawler pieces.
