Maryland flounder fishermen are looking forward to another flounder season in and around the coastal bays this year. They can thank those anglers that participated in the Volunteer Summer Flounder Angler Survey. In 2007 many states are facing increased size limits and larger closed season for their summer flounder recreational fisheries. Maryland however, will have the same regulations as the past two years, which include 4 fish @ 15.5 inches on the coast, and 2 fish @ 15 inches for the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. Maryland regulations will not have to change this year because the regulations we have in place have been able to restrict the recreational harvest in our state to our assigned quota, while still allowing for fishing opportunity for summer flounder that most anglers are happy with. The regulations we have in place were developed using data from the Maryland DNR Fisheries Service organized Summer Flounder Volunteer Angler Survey. The survey is in its sixth year, and is a compilation of data that is supplied to the Fisheries Service on catch rates, and size of the fish caught by volunteer anglers. The continued participation of anglers in the survey is essential for the Fisheries Service to be able to maintain maximum flexibility in regulatory options.
