I would like to do some cobia fishing this year but i need some help. I was planning on using a penn gti 330 with 30 pound braid backed with 30 pound mono and a 60 pound leader. Is this to light, over kill or about right. And in a previous post i read about a kite What is this? And finally what is a short wind rig and do you hook live bait through the back. Thanks in advance.

Mega Bite
Your Rig is in the Middle not too light not too Heavy.focus on the Basics for a season. Worry about the Kite after you have done it for a while. The kite isnt that hard but it is a bit much for entry level 1st time Cobia Fishing.Set your Drag so that it is 1/4 th to 1/3 the lines Test .1/4 at strike and 1/3 on the tighter beyond strike position.7 to 10 lbs of drag is all you will ever need with that Rig.If you cant stop the fish give chase.

Short wind on Rigs are for Spinning rods usually used for sight casting on Debris and Buoys.

Hook live bait through the back dorsal when up top on a float.Hook the live one through the lips when they are on a Fish finder rig or bump trolling. The current will make it do the helo if you dont.

I would agree if you are fishing right up against structure but Ive never had much trouble with 30 # setups. I think you are right on the money with your rig. I use baitrunners and tld 15s and 25s (kinda overkill) and I have never had any trouble. I usually use mono in the 20-30 pound range when Im sitting. If im crusing for them I will sometimes go as low as 15-20# spinning setups if I am able to manuever the boat during the fight. Be careful your rigs arent too heavy, cobia are curious fish but they have big eyes and can be spooked.

a little tip - Keep a bucktail, spot or large eel in rigged in the livewell attached to a spinning rod. Cobes are very curious and will come right up to a motor splashing in the swell or a chum bucket. A buddy of mine caught a 60#er about 2 feet from his stern by dropping a spot about ten feet past him and reeling it right up to him. how quickly a fish 2 feet from the boat can turn into a 30 minute fight.
