Sorry for the late report, didn't have access to post report. We arrived in Hatteras on Saturday the 7th of April to snow and sleet!! It was a warm welcome!! The weather only allowed us to fish on Monday and Tuesday. Here are the results....

My crew on Monday was my 63 yr old dad, my 10 yr old son, and 2 of my nephews, ages 13 and 11. On Tueday we swapped out my dad for my wife....

Monday started with a bang at the Rock Pile in 77 degree water, as soon as we got the lines in the water we had the short rigger start peeling drag and I officially caught my first Sea Turtle! Hooked him in the back flipper, he was about 50lbds and fought like a bandit!! Well, after a quick biology lesson for the boys, we safely returned the turtle to the deep. We reset the lines and it wasn't long before we caught 2 8-10lbd dolphin...put the lines back in and hooked up to a false albacore...as we were moving forward at a slow troll the shotgun went off and we landed a 28lbd wahoo!! It was Jake's (my 13yr old nephew) that landed it, and he was stoked!!! After the quick morning action, it dropped off to nothing...trolled to the 000's and didn't do a thing...came in around 3:00.

Tuesday was much the same weather, but when we got to the rock pile, it was 71 degree water...trolled for a while and picked up a 32" king, then around 9:30 we put my 10 yr old on his first 50lbd yellowfin! It wupped him pretty good, but Gus did a great job and stuck with it... we kept milling around and even tried dropping on some marks on the Rock Pile and picked up a small Amberjack, hooked up to a couple bigger mystery fish, but they got off....started trolling east of Rock Pile and had doubles on Yellowfin, my nephews had the rods and did a great job hanging with their fish, Brady (the 11yr old) caught a 45 lbder, and Jake caught a 51lbder...needless to say they are hooked for life!! We picked up another King and headed to the house....

Two good days on the water. I want to thank Mike for the deep drop butterfly jigs, they did what they were supposed to do....Steve at Teaches has em. Thanks for all your help and the #'s!!!

I met Todd down there and saw Don yesterday as I was fueling up to leave. I think it is awesome that the folks on the board here can meet up at a place and talk.

I did do something different this trip that I think was a key to our success. I put 25 yrds of 100lbd flourocarbon on each rod with a 150lbd sampo wind on swivel. I know it is overkill, but I don't think that I would have caught what I did had I not had that on there....I figure that since I am paying 250.00 in fuel to get out there, I might as well spend the 150.00 for the flouro to give me every advantage.

It was good to meet those of you from VBSF I met down in Hatteras, and I hope to get back there real soon. I will try to download some pics today and post them.

Pretty work gusman. Sorry I missed you. I came down on Friday and had some cold ones with Neal and Don on the Wired Up, along with Todd and his son Jake. Had to leave about noon on saturday. Didn't get a chance to fish, I was there to repair a roof in Buxton and a bilge pump in Wanchese. Tight lines.

Great work Gusman! The best hook-up is getting young anglers into the sport and teaching them the right way to be a responsible angler! Enjoy!
Tight lines.

Gusman, Glad i could help with the jigs and numbers, besides the weather you had a pretty good time and hats off to your boys. Did you have braid on the jigging rods or mono i have experienced alot of lost fish with just mono i think the braid really sends them hooks home i have been spooled twice this year on the butterfly jigs once at the 280 rock and once at the 530 hole off the point i beleive that fish was a bigeye as the boat next to us boated two bigeye in the 120 to 150 class thats alot of fish for the Stella 6000 and he ran away like he wasnt even hooked that reel actually is back at shimano as we smoked the insides. Anyway i am happy for you and your family good job. Conch27

We just had mono... I was wishing for some braid! You could feel the line stretch as you were jigging and when a fish would hit...so I believe that braid is definately the ticket... I can't imagine hooking a big eye doing that! That had to have been a rush! Thanks again for the use of the jigs and Steve has em for you. Hope to see you down there again soon...
