Is a NC fishing license required for offshore fishing? I was told by a lady at the fisheries department that if you are fishing outside of 3 miles, you don't need a license.

True, however you need one to bring a fish back to within 3 miles. That's what I read and heard.

Like rb190 said, if you bring the fish into a NC port you will need a license for anglers. 3 fish per person licensed.

Yeah, I just confirmed that with a woman at the fisheries department. She said only "anglers" need them and the only way to tell is if the marine patrol sees someone participating in the act of fishing. Tell me this. How many marine patrol boats do see when you're fishing offshore?

Not many. No need or desire to hide anything, but it is kinda nice not being watched all day. Like somedays in the bay. Somewhat of a last frontier don't ya think?
