Full Version: Sea Bass on the Jil Carrie

Hey guys. So far I have about 6 people interested--the consensus dates seem to be Feb. 19 or 26 (saturdays). I think if we can get 3-4 more we can do it. The max is 16. Let me know ASAP so I can make the arrangements with Capt. Jim. I think it'll be a blast ( I hear some of these sea bass are monsters and can approach 3-4 lbs.).

For those who haven't been out on this type of trip, it's quite a ways out to the ocean wrecks (several hours each way), so plan on an all day trip.

Let me know if your interested by PM, email (navedjafri@yahoo.com), or on this thread.

I will check on the Feb 26 date. May have 2 or 3 to go. It's only $80? What does it cover?

It's actually $120, since it's deep ocean all day--covers trip, all bait and tackle. You bring your own eats and drinks and tip for the mate.

I'm game for either date. Just tell me where I need to show up (presumably LBP) and what I need to bring (aside from a couple sandwiches and a digital camera).

Just let me know the time & date & I'll
be there.Does he take crab for a possible
tautog? If so is it frozen & can we bring
fresh if he doesn't have it???
Rob Holtz
If the weather is good and you guys can find a wreck that hasn't already been hit hard then you won't be keeping the ones that are less than 3 lbs. The monsters are in the 6-7 lb. range. It's a trip thats definatley lots o fun. smile.gif

I am definately in. Sign me up for 2 people. Either date is ok, just let me know. I am always anxioius to meet other fishermen..

Hello All,

I have confirmed Feb 19 with Capt. Jim on the Jil Carrie for a sea bass trip.

The cost is $120 per person + tip for the mate. Bring your own food and drink.

He can take 17--I've got 2, so for those of you who expressed interest, please give me a confirming e-mail and I'll put you on the list--this is just in case we have more than 17 planning on going. My email is:

navedjafri@yahoo.com

I think it'll be a great opportunity to meet other fishermen from this board and learn from each other--and the pro's on the Jil Carrie.

Hope to hear from all interested soon.

Tom ... 17 anglers on a good day, IM sure it averages out. I bet some trips run with 5 or 6 anglers on board. Try running a nice boat like that $$$$$$, you’ll change your tune! blink.gif It aint cheap!!!!!
marina girl
Plus you need to know that you are fishing for 9 hours. Lines in the water, hauling in fish steady. They have limited out everytime they have gone out. That is 25 sea bass each. Yesterday, 10 anglers, 250 plus fish, 17 ciatations, release and weight. The largest was 5lb 13oz. That's a good day fishing in any bodys book. They also caught tile fish, bluefish, cod and B-liner.

I went last year and had a blast. Intend to go again soon.

if something happens and my sons baseball game/s are cancelled that day, then i will go also. who knows unsure.gif - if i dont go, then i will hook up with you guys another day.

COME ON GUYS WHO ELSE IS GOING!!!
Capt. Jim Brincefield
Hopefully, the Sea Bass bite will hold up for your VBSF trip as it is smokin' red hot potatoe right now. We just got back to Long Bay Pointe Tackle with our second limit in a row with everyone on the boat getting citations again! It's the best Sea Bass fishing I've ever seen for big fish especially.

...and yes, Capt. Steve "The Professor" Wray was holding class on the deck of the "Jil Carrie" again today!

Can we get an idea of what the trip is like?
What time do we leave the dock and return?
How far out do we go?
etc.?

Im sorry but if I am going to pay that kind of money I'm going to Hatteras and going out for some real meat. $120.00 for sea bass is ludacris.
Minime
Last time I hit Hatteras for some meat I drove 3 hours, check into my room, got up the next morning to find out the trip was cancelled. I'll never do that again. Blew two days and $60.00.
Cool Breeze
i learned my lesson saturday on the super sport.
1) dont go if the boat is booked all the way up- too many people both inexperianced and experianced mixed up in one batch-
2) half had power pro and the other half (mostly inexperianced) had mono and used light lead -
3) i spent just as much if not more time untangling my line as i did fishing.
4) if the boat was only say half booked- and everyone or most everyone had a good idea of what was going on it would have made for a much better trip.
5) the mates were quick to cut the experianced anglers power-pro and leave the greenhorns mono -in-tact. there were heated words exchanged on more than one occasion and the mates tips probably suffered in that regard.
6)we stopped at several drops and had good results on one. we then left that spot to go to another ??????- maybe fred didnt want to clean out that one hantg i dont know
the only reason i went was to catch paper and i didnt - so i know all the money i spent was a risk anyways. it cost me 105 for the ticket, another hundred after buying new line, leads and hooks, and other stuff. those that just went to get some meat were really disapointed. for my 200 ducks i could have gotton a few other guys together and just chartered a six-pack. anyways beat the hell out of sitting at home not doing anything on saturday- guess i will haul my boat this weekend and start on the bottom. fun- yea right...... peace-
p.s.- hope this info helped someone- craig smile.gif

Mark Shinn holds up yet another Triple Header Black Sea Bass while the rest of the anglers on the boat are hooked up in a Jil Carrie Black Sea Bass frenzy!

The trip is usually about 18 hours. We leave the wharf at Long Bay Pointe Tackle at 2:00 a.m. We go out as far as necessary until everyone aboard has their limit of 25 and their Citations. We have limited out on every trip so far this year and most Sea Bass have been in the 3 to 6 pound range. We have also caught Cod, Tilefish, and small Bluefish on the wrecks.

As far as tangles, it is up to the individual anglers to work this out, we're all adults - I'm not going to "referee". We do have a spacious boat, with 16 feet of beam. However, tangles will occur if anglers do not stay "in their slots". This type of fishing trip is definitely not a trip for novices. Deep drop wreck fishing is for experienced hard core Sea Bass anglers only. We are fishing primarily in depths of 200' - 300' , way offshore, in cold air temperatures and high seas. The long ride is excrutiating. Bring a sleeping bag and pillow.

I would suggest a visit (or a phone call) to Long Bay Pointe Tackle and a talk with Capt. Steve Wray if you have concerns about our trip. Capt. Steve is one of the most experienced Sea Bass anglers in VA Beach and goes out with us every trip. He can address your concerns better than I can. "I just drive the bus"!

I will personally do everything in my power to ensure your trip is both safe AND productive.

During the week, the boat is not as crowded as the weekends. If the weather cooperates this week, we will fish Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday (this is a private charter), and Sunday. You can "walk on" any day except Saturday (private charter) by signing up in Long Bay Pointe Tackle Shop. The cost is $120.00 per person plus a tip for the mate. Fish cleaning will be extra.

The key is to sign up in the Tackle Shop and provide your phone number. This type of fishing is enormously dependant on the weather which (as you all know) changes all of the time.

I've been trying to work with the webmaster of this site to post some pictures of our 2005 trips, but apparently I'm doing a poor job!

Hope to see you all!

Hey thought I would bring it back.
Are we still on so far? smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif
NJ1
Yes we are. Will be leaving the docks at 2 am (Long Bay Pointe). Capt. Jim suggests bringing a sleeping bag and pillow along with your eats and drinks. I'll send all of you guys an e-mail the day before if anything changes.

There are still openings available--if anyone wants to join us, just show up at the dock.

Are they just using squid for bait for the big seabass? If not what do they like?

The current weather forecast for your Saturday charter trip looks "iffy" right now. We will continue to monitor the forecasts and make a decision by Friday afternoon.
