Does anyone have any info on the Hot Dog or the CLT. Was out at the light a few weeks agoand nothing but sharks. Anyone know when the Mahi are going to move North from Hatteras. Any info would be appreciated.

I have 0 facts to support this, but given the Hot Dog is currently sitting at 54F I would say it is dead. My experience is that about 5/20 to 6/1 you'll see lots of football bluefins with an occasional good one mixed in, along some snake kings and bonitas. I personally have not done much prior to those dates in the past, but there's only one sure fire way to know. Go for it, Dude - Sunday is the day.

I agree with Kent. The Hot Dog will start to turn on soon as water temps rise. Big bluefish and then smaller bluefin are a possibility. Someone has to run point...so go Catch 'em Up!
Good luck if you go and give us a report.

Hot dog is 32 nm from Rudee. It will warm up into the mid to upper 70's. Great place for early bluefin action and some dolphin when it gets real warm.

It is a great place to fish.
I have caught a LOT of fish there. Last year those bluefins stayed a long time. We caught a good one at the very end of July on a drone spoon and planer right on top od the 'Dog.
If you have a smaller boat and are concerned about going way offshore, the Hot Dog is a great intermediate place.
I haven't personally, but I know people who have caught dolphin and decent yellowfin there.
The main problem with it is the hordes of bluefish. Sometimes there are just swarms of them. They eat Baitmasters ballyhoo like popcorn. It's a sad sight to rig those pretty baits and watch 8 bluefish make mince meat outof them at one time.

We caught a few Mahi there last June.
In fact we caught one between the Dog and the CLT. As soon as you get in blue water start looking for anything floating.

I always seem to see fishy areas around the Hot Dog while running out to other offshore grounds. On those really slick days you can see bait being balled up by something...gotta be fish there.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm going to try to hit it up next weekend if not hunting. If anyone wants to buddy up let me know. Maybe the weather will be permitting. Like Skinny said it would be fun to run point on that. Nice looking blues also Bob.

while you are poking around down around the hot dog, there are a pile of other interesting spots. i like the 10 fathom bump between the fish hook and the hot dog. also wander south and into the se lumps and boomarang area. we actually got a white marlin there, and scored quite a few wayward yellowfin. mostly blue fin, king macs and bluefish though.

what exactly is the hot dog?

it is a 10 fathom seamount in the basic shape of a hot dog. look on an offshore chart straight out east and a bit south of rudy ~30 miles. it is surrounded by 15 ish fathoms to the west and down to 20 is to the east. current hits the seamount and pushes goodies up. didnt there use to be a big scalloping operation in the se lumps area?

It's a seamount. Should change the name to the Bratwurst, that's what it resembles on the chart. Same as the "fingers", "fish hook" and the "meat cleaver", they're just oddly shaped bottom contours. And I'm down in Charleston, SC and the possum grits here are the best I've ever had!

possum grits hmmm..... i was thinking of beaver grits tonight. george you know my leathal beaver obsession. went to the pond this morning and they had blocked the standpipe with mud and sticks. the water was up 10 inches easy!
hope you are settling in down there ...
