[SIZE=1] Went out today with my father in law. It was his 1st time out on my boat. He has done some traditional bottom fishing in his life but he has never caught anything more than a small croaker, spot or oyster toad. I was hoping to put him on to some flounder. Since it was his 1st time on my boat I did not want to run to far out of Sunset in Hampton so we just hit the HRBT. We put out 4 lines with flounder rigs and some good old flounder belly for bait. He caught 1 small 14 incher. We did a few more drifts and then headed over to the bar to try some deeper water. I just wanted to catch anything so I put out a bottom rig with some bloodworm fishbites. I caught 2 small kingfish and one 7 inch croaker. I noticed his line was not holding on the bottom so I hooked him up with an 8 ounce. He dropped his line over the side and I heard the drag screaming. I thought he had snagged the bottom or something, but then I noticed the line moving all over so I knew he had something and the way it was fighting I knew it had some size to it. It was a 34 inch Striper and it was thick. I have never caught a rock fish while drifting for flounder. I am glad that he did. I was fine with my father in law getting the big one for the day. I think he is hooked now.

Gil,
Your supposed to do that before you get married.... I was told that way he'll for sure pay for the wedding. Good job putting him on the fish.
We opted out of fishing and anchored out at Langley and watched the air show from the water... Really cool! but not as cool as that fish!
Take Care,

Nice work Gil.......I'm supposed to take my Father in Law fishing in a few weeks when they are down from Jersey........He's not much of a fisherman or sea-goer so it should be interesting....

EARLYTIMES, if you are thinking of ''King Mackeral'' thats not what Gil caught. Kingfish, can also be known as ''Mullet'', they make great table fare and can be caught regulary at the HRBT. Last year we caught large numbers of them, here is a pic below (sorry for the small pic), tight lines,

Hey Neptuneighty8. No it is not Spring seasonyet until the 15th. Trophy season starts tommorow( 1 fish per person 32in. or greater). We were not targeting rock fish it just happened. We snapped a few photos and the fish was released unharmed. GIL
