Since Im not really into the sub-freezing temps to fish for striper in my center console I am looking ahead a few months and was wondering if anyone had any advice for drum fishing. Im looking for any tips on gear, rigs, techniques, timing, or any other advice you can offer. I have never targeted big drum (reds or blacks) and thought I would give it a shot when it starts to warm up. I have a 21 cc and would be running out of lynnhaven inlet. Thanks in advance.

also :
use chunk style circle hooks
60-100 lb mono or flourocarbon leader
tld reels are my choice
crab, bunker, and live fish may work as well as clam
4-8 oz frog tongue sinkers
also some artificials will work

Thanks a lot... I have 2 tld 15s on 17-40# live bait rods and 2 6500 baitrunners on 25# rods (20# test) so I am sure I have the rods to roll with, just never tried big drum fishing. I guess the spots are latimer shoal and other spots between kiptopeeke and the southern side of the eastern shore. Any advice on water temp and depths, I know they tend to bite later in the day, rougher and shallower water.

we usually fish in 12 to 14' of water. also mix up the bait- we will use whole live crabs on a couple and whole menhaden on the other two. (red drum) when chumming(chunking is more accurate) i like to mix crabs in the chum tube along with the bunker to "kick it up a notch". i like 5 to 8 oz pyramid sinkers on the fishfinder rigs and our leaders are usually no longer than 3 foot. i prefer the ocean side of the cbbt for reds, and although we catch an occasional black- we dont do the sea-clam targeting thing for blacks like a lot of people do. (right zach!!!

),lol- cant wait !!!!!!

My 15 yr old son and I went to a seminar put on by Debbie Hurst at OE II last spring to learn about this.
Sooo we proceed out to the CBBT shoals right time, moon and all with a bud of mine who never even Saltwater fished.
We caught about 6 or 7 Drum we had 3 citations that night several break offs what an amazing fish.
I have a flyer from the seminar I'd be glad to fax to you if your interested.
Can't wait to take a whack at it again this year.
Send me your email address
