I am only experienced in inshore fishing in this area and in Cuba. I'm probably one of the most ignorant people in the world when it comes to offshoe fishing. I know that the temperature plays a major role in all fishing. My major question is, is it completely necessary to travel all the way to the G. stream or an eddy r are there other opertunities between for other species like mahi mahi for instance. The boat that will be used carries a little less than 250 ga fuel. Based on the 3rd's rule we can only go about 80 to 90 mi off shore thus leaving the Gulf stream or many eddies way out of reach (based on hitorical charts). Can someone help me figure out some locations or some ideas on where to go, what to troll besides ballyhoo for other species and what to do if the stream is unreachable please. I thank you all in advance for any help on this.

What size of boat and what size are the engines? 250 gallons should get you where you want to go.

Pete...the opportunities are wonderful out of Virginia Beach..the average run is about 60NM from Rudee inlet. The spinoffs from the Gulf stream come into the 100Fathom line from the Cigar to the Norfolk Canyon and bring lots of life with it. Tuna, Wahoo, Mahi, White and Blue Marlin, occasionally a Sailfish all show up starting any day now. most of the skippers in the midatlantic talk in Loran TD lines so it would be good to get a chart that has an overlay of the TD lines on it.

Short runs this time of the year are the Fingers and the hot dog, which hold BlueFin Tuna, usually not the monsters but nice class of fish.

Right now most people who can are fishing out of Oregon Inlet and Hatteras as the fish are thick down there right now, but June starts the weekend runs out to the 100Fathom line and beyond from here.

Lots of good people on here and a couple of Charter Captains who will be glad to help you out. Try and make it to one of our Monthly Meet and Greets that Skinnys Kid puts together...good times and good info.....Bob

Pete,
Welcome to the board!! Lots of good info here along with great members to pass it along. This will start to heat up out of VA beach very soon and you should have no problem running to the closer offshore grounds.

Email Donna Sea...Charlie...he holds the "Buddy Boat List". Its a list of members that run offshore or nearshore. They will look for people to buddy boat with when going out....good to know people when you're out on the water.

Watch the Calender or the General Chat for the monthly Meet and Greets.
