So, What is the deal with the moon and fishing? Or,is there a deal? I know about the tide and who it affects them.

So the question is, is fishing better during a full moon or worse? Or does it depend on the species?

Cheers..

Here's my findings with a full moon.

Offshore - stay at the dock. Unless it's an overnighter. The tuna and other fish feed on the squid on the surface all night. For me the billfish bite is unbeleivable during a new moon.

Inshore - the only one that I have found not to bite as well are flounder. I'm sure there are others but I just haven't noticed the moon phase.

Generally, if there is a full moon stay at home---day or night.

The Best time to fish..... every chance you get ! Sometimes you catch sometimes you don't .... But it is better than almost anything else your going to do.

I have found it to be varied with the full moon, although I will never fish the Beaufort Sound in SC again at my dads during a full moon action-smiley-025.gif The tide gets ripping so hard during that time that even moored bouys are forced below the water level. Impossible to keep baits on the bottom.

Gotta agree with Tod on that one, however, when I have guests onboard that I want to ensure they catch fish I usually don't like/try to schedule them if the moon is/has been full.

Of course I haven't done a scientific study or anything biggrin.gif

I’ll just say that I have spent a lot of time logging my fishing in fresh and salt water. Have been told my entire fishing life that full moon is not the best time to fish. For whatever reason that doesn’t seem to apply to me. Maybe that deal with the devil I made I’m not sure. But I catch fish on full moons.

Now Blue Moons (2 full moon in a month) like we had the beginning of this month really sucks. Could not get a drift to save my life. No water moving and no fluke biting.

I truly believe the best time to go is any time I have. food-smiley-004.gif

Thanks for your thoughts! I'm just looking for excuses for the run of BAD luck I have been having lately.

Cheers!

Caught some mighty big rockfish and bluefish on full moons.

If you want to use the moon for fishing, here's a site with the solunar calendar to help you pick your times. You'll note on the calendar the best times are around the full and new moon stages.

I think its species dependant. The moon's pull on the tides will cause bigger tide swings and more water moving witch can improve fishing for some.

I was always ready to use the excuse that it was a full moon, thats why no tuna, BUT we saw/had our best tuna action during the Pirate's Cove Tuna Roundup...it was a full moon. Now granted the bite was much later in the day, around noon. If they eat at night, they'll be hungry again soon. Just gotta be there when their ready to eat.

Fish when you can.
