We left out of Rudee at 4:30am towards deep dropping country off Virginia Beach aboard my buddy Jake Hile’s boat, the Matador. The crew was Tom Kidwell, Greg Allen, Chuck Kahlert, Dr. Ike, Robin and my Mom (Sharon), and our mate, Bill Knapp. The weather was beautiful, with calm seas. At 50 fathoms we marked of stacks of bluelines and hooked fish until we had a limit for the anglers. The largest blueline was a citation for Dr. Ike at 10lb. 4 oz. Next stop was 150 fathoms. In no time we began hooking blackbellied rose fish in 900ft. While hooking these weird little fish, I hooked into something that pulled back. Big fish on. The crew awaited my 10 minute fight from the depths, where the confirmation of a nice 21.5 lb golden tile popped to the surface. Yay. Chuck had the next one a while later, about 15 pounds. We boated a total of seven goldens, with Jake’s weighing in at 31 lbs. We investigated a few mores spots, and then headed in with a very tired, but content group.
Talley: for the day were 49 blueline tiles, 7 golden tiles, several dozen black bellied rosefish, and two red hakes. We also caught and released a few bait-swiping birds.
A great day on the water, with great folks!
