What is the best way to fish for spades on the wrecks? Is it the same as fishing the tower.
Deepsea
I've never fished for them before what is the best bait to use and the best method?

Hey Guys,

I like the discussion so I'll put in my two cents. I went out there with a friend last year and the bait we used was claims. Granted I didn't catch anything as I didn't have a clue of how to fish for spades or any other type of fish. But with the help of the people on this website, I'm learning more and more with each post. Thanks Gigolot!

can spades be caught in the bay or are they more of an ocean dweller.

My technique is to pick them off the pilings of the CBBT. If you cruise alongside the pilings during slack tide, you can often spot them about 3' below. Those tend to be the smaller ones. Fish a foot or two below the visible ones to get the bigger ones. I fish almost on top of them and it doesn't seem to spook them much.

Small ones are great for making your pole jump around - you can tell a big boy because he makes a run peeling off line. I clamp down on the drag when fishing this way because the big ones inevitably run around the piling and bust you off. As soon as I set the hook, I try to turn them away from the piling. Also, I use 30lb braid due to the amount of muscling I have to do to keep them off the pilings. Even so, I lose several rigs fishing this way.

I have a small boat, so it is easy for me to maneuver to where I need to be - this technique would be problematic for anything larger than a 20'. You will also make good use of your rubrail, so if you want your boat to stay purty lookin', this technique ain't for you wink.gif !

Gigolot, is your Shimano 401 a freshwater reel? Shimano told me they made no LH reels (other than spinning) for saltwater.
Ketchup
Thanx. I take it you like the Catala...

We went to the C tower out of OI last july. Spade fish all over the place. We used small hooks and a piece of clam with a slit shot (Brim fishing learned that at age 4). They would not touch the rods with 14 pound test. But the ones with 6 and 8 pound test were constantly bent over. We would fight'm for a while, then the sharks and barracudas would hit'm. Only got a few in the boat. One cuda followed the head up a waited for me to throw it over. The cuda was about as long as the 8' beam on the boat. Got braid this year. Can t wait.

Mega Bite I had some young kids about 12-14 jump in off the transom out at tower C last summer , Sounds like its not a good idea to let them cool-off out there, they were'nt in the water long maybe 5min.

It only takes about 1/10000 of a second for a Mako to react to a large splash.I wouldnt try that again.Tower A,B and C have a lot of cartilaginous species hanging around them. After live bateing off False Cape for the past 15 years or so I have a hard time taking my kids to the Beaches South of Va Bch.

Yeah I bought the Shimano corvalus baitcaster reel. I'm not real sure if it was a defect or what but I had to modify it to make the free spin, actually spin free. I've modified several items on the reel to make it work properly. It still takes 3 times the lubing as my el cheapo wal mart rods.
