Left Richmond 1 am. Lines in at mid southern wall of canyon at 6:15 and. heard someone in the vicinity of the fingers say he had 3 in the box. Last week we short stopped at the fingers and missed the canyon bite. This time we went for the canyon and overshot the WW bite.
Trolled all over for 3-4 hrs at the canyon and short of 1 pod of porpoises saw no sign of life.
Picked up and ran to the 30 f line east of the fingers and worked that area until mid afternoon with no luck. Mid afternoon Trolled into the fingers and began to see surface swimming bailers but couldn't interest them. Finally about 4 pm found a 30 ft tree floating that had a few dolphin that were willing to play and one large Bull dolphin( actually huge) that was not. I believe I saw a good size Wahoo deep also. put a few good sized bailers in the box
Tried again on the Tuna troll until 7pm with nothing but a dolphin hit on a flat line.
Back at OC 8:30. Long day, disappointing from the tuna standpoint but I am glad that many others got into them. Sure would like to know where Still Thinking was fishing.
Really did enjoy listening to the all day battle going on out there with what sounds like a 500 lb bluefin. It was still a mystery fish when we pulled up. Beautiful ride back in . Next Time! Bob

Glad you at least got some dolphin out of the trip. Its very possible there were wahoo on that log. Best wahoo bite I've ever seen came off of a floating log 2 years ago. Our boat pulled 3 off of it, another got 5 and one other got 4, all 30+ pounds. May be try dropping a jig down next time. thanks for the report!!

Actually I did try butterfly jigging bottom to top with no takers, but if i had hooked that wahoo odds are slim that I would have gotten him as that tree had branches going deep. Bob

Anyone know what that mystery fish was with the long fight? Saturday was my first day at the Canyon, a few people on the boat thought it was a tall tale, I was thinking a foul hooked sunfish or something...

Enjoying the boards here, wish I could make it down to Va Beach more often.

nevermind, i found it...

so what was it??

Craig, it was a giant bluefin tuna. 10 1/2 hours on the fight before it broke off is what I heard.
